well i'm sure that the stranglers haven't got legions of fans on barbelith, but i used to be really into them as a youngster. in 1979 both hugh cornwell and j j burnel released separate solo albums, which i think were miles better and more intelligent than their stuff together. cornwell did 'nosferatu' with robert williams (drummer with capt. beefheart), which was rocky, but dark and atmospheric. they described it as 'the soundtrack to a film that will never be made'. pretty accurate, and i still play it all the time. j j burnel's album, 'euroman cometh' was very ahead of its time - compared to what was going on in england anyway. hadn't heard it for ages until the other day and i was surprised at how fresh it sounded.
compared to the often depressing sexist grebo rock the stranglers could come out with, the solo stuff was especially good. |
