Captain Kirk's captains chair on eBay How much? Only a mere $80,000. Mind you, that's only the opening bid. Lord knows how much it'll actually sell for.

So what online auction stories do you have? Do you loathe eBay? Or did you get lucky and find that rare 1st pressing of "Rubber Soul" for $15? Or doesn't it make any difference to you one way or the other? And speaking of eBay, anybody got any alternatives (especially for CD's I don't listen to anymore)?

$80,000 for a chair? Jesus. That's insane. I wonder how comfortable it is.

I have no auction stories and loathe ebay. Why? Because I don't have a credit card. Thus, I can't register because you have to verify that you're over the age of 18. How the hell is that supposed to be verification?

Xuppa Auctions seems to be a pretty good alternative.

my mother has become obsessed with ebay. her house is becoming filled with little dolls, which scare the fuck out of me when i go down to visit. she says if certain names appear to be 'winning' a bid, she'll dive in, just to piss them off. gullible? oh yes.

and my sister has noticed what appears to be people known to the seller pushing up the bids. obvious, really.... with anything like this, you have to decide how much the object is worth to *you*. the 'iwantitiwantitiwantit' culture is all around us anyway. ebay i suppose is a novelty, for now.

wouldn't say no to kirk's chair, though....

I got a fully functional accordion for only $75.

And a pretty nice antique diamond ring for a fraction of what it could have been worth.

Love the auctions...

Got alot of money to waste--for no reason in particular? Well, on eBay you can win the bid to name this woman's child. And right now it's a steal at only $338!! Yep, plus the page has all kinds of neat-o info on the mother-to-be (like the fact that she loves Tigger!--Wow!).

That auction is a definite contender for the Top 10 Strange & Bizarre Things I Have Seen...and I'm talking about the baby name auction, not Kirk's chair (and what do you mean, it's just a goodamnchair???).

...we should pass the hat around and see if we get enough together to make a winning bid, then have a big debate on what to call the kid.

Love eBay. Got a 1969 Rollei 35s with the Sonnar lens for under $200. Also got the first 4 ZZ Top albums on vinyl, to avoid the terrible CD remix/remasters. My rommate just got a copy of an obscure 1000-pressed vinyl release that he's been looking for for seven years. Very useful.

But I don't want to name anyone's kid. Not even my own. Now, that gives me an idea...

Cap'n Kirk's chair finally went for US$265,000. And eBay closed down the auction for the right to name the kid on the ground that they only sell merchandise.
