A thread for moderators to announce they've moved a topic, and let us all know where it is now.

For example:

The Monarch is good for the country topic is now in the Switchboard.

This is a good idea - but I'm not sure it'll actually get used much...

Yeah. Lovely idea in principle. Only problem being, if no topics get moved for ages, then this thread sinks, and becomes just as much hassle to find as the topic you're looking for, which, having just been moved, will probably be at the top of whichever forum it was moved to.
Although it's still a great idea.
Tom- is there any way we could have a "topic moved" feature for each forum? So you'd go to, say, the Switchboard, and there'd be, along with the list of current topics, whichever topics had been moved in the last couple of days, and where to?

Do I have to do it myself? And can we keep the metachatter to another thread so that it's easy to find stuff?

Newest move: Urgent Privacy Update" is now in the Switchboard.

"Lust and Long-term Relationships" has moved to the Conversation.

Some kind moderator has moved "YES!!!!!" (about the upcoming He-Man comic and its implications for the industry) from Comics to the Conversation.

Matthew Fluxington
13:27 / 14.06.02
Why was it moved? That makes no sense - it was a thread about the comics industry, why would it be put in the Conversation?

If any moderator action should have been taken, it should have had the title changed.

Interestingly I've just seen that someone HAS suggested a name change. Haven't seen what forum it's been moved to yet though...

I've been suggesting about a thousand thread moves this afternoon, many of which are likely to get ratified - mostly moving things from the Head Shop and Switchboard into the Laboratory - old and new. I would very much appreciate people's opinions, and if you wish to move some of them back - then please do - but before you do so, think about whether or not the Laboratory feels more consistent, and more importantly less of a ghetto!

I voted to move the "Yes!!" thread because it was drifting from a comics thread to a thread about nostalgia in general.

If I erred, dip me in mulch and cheese dip.

12:06 / 16.06.02
Are you sure it wasn't a nostalgia thread that drifted off into being a discussion of the comics industry?

Solitaire Rose as Tom Servo

Nope, it started by discussing the He-Man comic, and those of us who hate 80's culture were decrying it was the end of Civilization as we know it.

OK, we weren't saying it was that bad, but Jesus God, He-Man? That cartoon made my eyes bleed when I was a kid.

May I borrow the Tipping Point thread from the Head Shop for the Books forum for a while? Can I move it myself, or do I have to ask a Head Shop moderator?

Spatula Clarke
13:17 / 17.06.02
You can only perform moderator actions on threads that are currently in your forum. So no moving in to, only moving out of.

Persephone

Ah, thank you. In that case, Tom (as it was your thread), do you mind if I have at it for a while? In Books, that is? And if Tom says OK would a kind Head Shop moderator give 'er a shove over?

We're The Great Old Ones Now

You might do better to start a parallel thread, and link across any time there's relevant crossover. I think Tom started that thread in the Head Shop for a reason.

Incidentally, can we keep linking to moved threads from here, rather than discussing thread-move policy? As long as we use the 'find' it's not hard to track stuff even though there's dialogue here as well, but le's not lose track of the point of the thread, eh? It's a hub for finding moved topics...

It should be in the Head Shop, but that doesn't mean that people can't take over the conversation in that forum!

Bush up close is in the Switchboard, on the basis that it's political, relevant to current events, and may turn into a discussion of Bush himself, or the need for intelligence in a President, or maybe Mister Sun will give us more of the same...

Some kind person has moved the "Wind-Powered Buildings" thread to the Laboratory, which I suppose makes sense: I originally stuck it in Art & Design for the same reason I put my thread about the Falkirk Wheel there: because, functionality aside, it's just so damn beautiful.

I'm a little curious as to why the "feminism and the scientific method" thread has been moved from Headshop to the Lab. Whilst it's obviously got a fairly heavy science componant, I'd suggest that the general trend of the discussion is more suited to the original forum.

As a frequent visitor of the Laboratory, I am requesting that you Switchboard people refrain from dumping your unwanted threads on our front lawn.

Tom Coates
09:22 / 02.08.02
I have kept moving it to the Laboratory because firstly the Laboratory needs some more action, secondly because we shouldn't just think that you use critical faculties in the Head Shop and nowhere else. I think it's all to do with subject of discussion and method of discussion. If it's a feminist critique of a movie, then subject is movie - thread is in film. If it's a queer critique of science then it goes in Lab - subject is science. This one's a little cross-boundary, but hey...

Yeah, I was just curious. Like you say it's a cross-boundary thread, which is why I haven't tried to sling it back over the Headshop's fence.

RE: Cocaine and heroin threads moved.

Why is the process of people recollecting their own subjective experiences of an issue not a valid methodology for genuine exploration of said issue? It strikes me that writing off threads like these as somehow less insightful than threads which contain arguments is a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

You have fallen into the fallacious assumption that "clever threads go in the Head Shop". The conversations about Cocaine and Heroin may be absolutely fascinating. They may throw up any number of fascinating insights. But conversations, without topic abstracts, asking about the price of heroin are precisely that, capital-c Conversation.

And because "people recollecting their own subjective experiences of an issue" is not a methodology. It's a memoir. But that is rather less important.

Head Shop: Philosophy and Cultural Studies: Postmodernity, Deconstruction, Marxism, Queer Theory, Feminism - analysing the 21st Century.

Now, if someone were to put forward a theory of heroin use as an act of identity-creation, rejection of conventional lifestyles, or political action, that might well be a Head Shop topic. Absent that, however, Haus is right. Neither topic has sustained any kind of analysis. These are interesting views and recollections, but not especially relevant to the Head Shop.
