I just ripped this off urban75:

(06-06) 11:13 PDT LOS ANGELES (AP) --

Dee Dee Ramone, a founding member of the pioneer punk band the Ramones, was found dead of a possible drug overdose in his Hollywood home, the coroner's office said Thursday. He was 50.

Ramone, whose real name was Douglas Glenn Colvin, was found dead on the couch by his wife when she returned home at 8:25 p.m. Wednesday, said Craig Harvey, operations chief for the coroner's office. Paramedics were called and he was declared dead at 8:40 p.m.

"The investigator noted drug paraphernalia, including a single syringe on the kitchen counter, and we are handing it as a possible accidental overdose," Harvey said. An autopsy was planned later Thursday.

The death comes 11 weeks after the band was celebrated with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

That's awful. He wrote Poison Heart on Mondo Bizzaro too! That's the Ramones's greatest song!

Sad indeed, but (I have to say) much less shocking than Joey's relatively early end. I'm surprised Dee Dee made it through the 70's.

Deric/Arthur's right, he's damn lucky he lived this long with the kind of life he was living. I mean, there really was a reason why he co-wrote "Chinese Rocks". Read "Please Kill Me" if you don't believe me. Sad to see him go? Of course. Surprised? Hell no.

*sighs* This sucks. He's dead and the Stones are on tour again. I need no further proof that there is no god.

*sigh* I wouldn't have minded so much, but that's such a undignified way to go - 'dead of suspected overdose in LA mansion aged 50' .. that's the way crap old rock stars are supposed to bite the dust, not Ramones.

For the record, Dee Dee was a total fascist - some of lyrics he wrote are absolutely appalling - but then, on the other hand, I think he probably played a bigger part in defining the (musical) blueprint of 'punk rock' than anyone else. In general, I get the impression that all the Ramones thrashier, angrier songs were his while Joey was more responsible for the poppy / Motown elements .. and he was one of the coolest and most amazing bass players to have ever walked the earth, no question.

Predictably, this have sent me into a bit of a slump.

Has anyone listened to Joey's solo album?
Is it any good?

Yes! It kicks a hell of a lot of ass. Download it, if only for his "it's a wonderful world" and "1969". There's only one really depressing song about dying of cancer.

not that i really give a shit [punqcrok or what] but the day he died i was reading the book 'please kill me' and got to the chapter on the ramones [not even their real surname y'know] and read about the first time d-d done a blowjob. he seems a nice guy from the quotes, but i do not always like alcoholics when i meet them in real life.

God damn this is depressing. I don't really know what to say. I thought Dee Dee had gone off the smack years ago, but he either kept it up all these years (which is stupid), or took it up again (which is even stupider). I don't want to speak ill of the dead. I love the Ramones (i even organise an annual tribute show to them, which I'm not mercenary enough to plug here), but this was a stupid way for a 50 year old to die. Still, I'll really miss the idiot.

My band played the night I heard about it, and we wore black armbands.

I'm not sure it's fair to say that Dee Dee was a "total fascist". He did seem to have something of a fascination with Germany in general (he was born there), and he wrote the lyrics to Today Your Love... ("I'm a Nazi, baby", and so on), and may heave even worn swastikas and the like early on (I'm not sure), but, it seems to have been largely for shock value, and he ditched that sort of thing pretty early. Also, he wrote Bonzo Goes to Bitburg, a song opposing Ronald Reagan visiting the graves of Nazi officers.

I was thinking more of tunes like Let's Go, This Ain't Havana and High Risk Insurance. Check out the lyrics - all the freakier for being stuck between the likes of Baby, I Love You and Rock n' Roll HighSchool.. also there are some pretty 'infamous' interview quotes I've seen. Don't remember the exact wording, but he seemed very keen on the "let's kick those towelheads ass, USA is the best" line of thinking. I mean, previously I'd assumed that Commando and Today Your Love.. were pisstakes, but it makes you wonder.. (not to mention 53rd & 3rd, which still scares the shit out of me).

It would be hard for a song like "Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World" to be taken seriously in any sort of way (what with the whole "nazi trooper in a stuper yes I am" thing going on with it). And I'm pretty sure the one who makes all the semi-fascist comments is Johnny (who is so right wing he's been flying in circles for the past twenty six years or so). And none of the Ramones wore swastikas early on, they've always been plain black leather jacket and t-shirt and jeans (and I doubt that there' many jews in Queens that would wear a swastika).
