I've now added buttons at the bottom of the page that allow people to sign up for subscriptions and the like/

Is there any way we can send money without going through Paypal? Having neither a credit card, or a checking account, I really can't do much with Paypal.

Not at the moment. Maybe soon enough though...

You can send a check to the Queer Granny P.O. box & I will forward the $$ to Tom via Queer Granny's PayPal. PM me for details, if you want.

Damn - I've used Paypal to pay for several Ebay purchases and, at least once, to help out with the board. And now, I try to subscribe, and I'm *stymied*. Is there some code I should enter? Some address I should make it out to? What's going ON, man?

Have I set it up incorrectly? Is anyone else having trouble with it?

I think I've fixed it now...

So of course now I'm just waiting for someone to reverse the inexorable move towards no one paying subscriptions. Which seems to be what's happening at the moment. I don't think I can legitimately pay $130 a month to keep this place going. Someone has to help!

It takes some time because you need the security number in your bank statement.

Can we please get a list of who'sz contributing put up? We don't need secrecy around here. There's no reason not to present it.

What exactly is a list of people who contribute money really going to accomplish? Don't you think those people who can't contribute for one reason or another feel bad enough without this silly list being put up?

Mr Wolfe

Well, it needn’t accomplish the negative – It’s not a list of people who don’t support the community, it’s a list of people who do. As I see it, $100 a month = 40 members at the most, so picking out one of the other 870 people who post here but don’t send cash is going to be a bit difficult to justify.

It’s more of a ‘well done – you’re a good person’ thing. The two sites I contribute to already operate a ‘thank you for the help’ list of contributors. One does it once a month, the other regularly updates a list. Seems fair enough. What have we got to hide hey?

Buuutttt….I’d also be way interested to see who’s not contributing. 40 people out of what I see as at least 100 regular posters? And seeing as it sounds like Tom Coates NEEDS our help to keep this site going. A case of putting your money where your mouth is!

I’d be interested to see who’s not contributing, but not for the point of picking someone out as a freebie-jumping bigmouth – Ian Adonai made a quite reasonable request that membership of the site be conditional on fees AS WELL as invitation, and Tom made the decision to not make that membership fee-conditional, so I see a thank-you list as a way of working around this. Not a public naming and shaming, because it’s directed towards doing good, not bad.

But really, we’ve introduced ways of paying with every credit/debit card under the sun, and also introduced ways of also paying with cheques, postal orders, etc, so there’s no reason that someone who owns a computer, and pays for internet access and telephone line rental, or an hour in an Internet cafĂ©, can’t contribute a measly $3 a month. Tom has paid for the site for years and years, and now he’s finally asking for help, but, quite realistically not making membership of the site fee conditional to back up the ideological aims, I think we SHOULD be doing our utmost to make sure Tom DOESN’T have to operate on a purely pragmatic basis.

So please, put the list up. As a contributor I’d like to see who my fellow contributors are!

1)You don't need a list of contributors. If you know that you've contributed, that should be good enough for you.

2)The only real way to pay is with Paypal. Money Orders and checks are not accepted unless you first send them to someone who will do the whole paypal thing for you.

3) A measley $3 is a lot of money for someone who doesn't have a source of income.

Yes, strange how the only person before who supported this was the Knodge. You're not trying to stop being continually kicked off for general twatishness on the grounds you contribute to the place are you 'Phil'?

No.

Everyone behave themselves. I'm not comfortable with the public publishing of people who have contributed. If you want to say that you've contributed, please feel free to do so, but I want to make it clear again that people who help pay for the site don't get any special treatment in any way, and experience no benefits or privileges, other than being comfortable knowing that the site isn't crippling me financially. For a while we were getting in about $90 a month, but I think that's dropped to about $70. The bills are $130 ish. I can pretty easily cover the shortfall at the moment, but you know what.... I'd rather it didn't get any larger!

As someone who dosen't post a whole lot, yet has gotten a fair amount of useful info out of this place, I can see why I should contribute. I have no problem with that. Funny, since I let my hotmail acocunt of 3+ years go w/o a thought, since I didn't want to pay for it. Also let my another.com account slide for that same reason. I guess I just put my money where my mouth is.
I can't pay just this second, as I have a car insurance bill I just wrote a cheque for still outstanding, but I have previously used paypal for begging $$ from my brother, so I am already set up to do so. Oh yeah, and when rent's paid. dang... look at my silly excuses.
i'll do it. promise.

I keep wanting to contribute, but I also keep running into situations where I wonder how I'm going to be able to afford to eat until I get paid again. So maybe when the govenment gives me assloads of money for school in the fall, I can donate a nice chunk of change then.

Not sure if this goes under this topic, but... well first I should say that Queer Granny has yet to make money, so I'm not saying that this will do the trick... but, I was wondering, is it possible to have a spot in some central location for links, id est a link to the Queer Granny site? Which I am going to get a proper domain for soon & redesign, now that I've actually learned HTML, so that it will not be all pink and using Courier?

There's a QG thread here somewhere, but it's quite buried by now & it would be rather obnoxious of me to keep bumping it.

Also, I think it would be cool to have links to other people's sites --say, for example, if there becomes a Jenny Everywhere site, it would be great to be able to link out from Barbelith. Lots of others I can think of, too.

Cool idea with the buttons. Just out of interest is there a way that you could put in a non subscription button. I know it sounds pretty lame of me but I'm just not financially organised enough to remember that I'll be paying money on a certain day. A nice "Make A Donation Today" button would be good for me and others like me if they exist.

Again. I have money. You can have it. I just can't do PayPal shit with my sucky credit rating.

A PO box where we could send cheques'd be useful... (I think they're free to set up, but if not, I'm more than willing to pay to open one just so I can send my money to it.)

for the "pay today", you could just go straight to paypal. just log in, go to "send money", and fill in the blank fields. the email address youll need to enter is: donations@barbelith.com

only takes about 5 minutes

The subscription buttons are a cool idea, although I agree that it might also be beneficial to set up a 'pay today' button for those that do not want to / cannot afford to take out a monthly subscription.

Additionally, how about having a small graphic that shows the estimated monthly costs involved in keeping Barbelith alive alongside the total donations / subscriptions for each period (in a Blue Peter stylee). This might serve to remind people when Barbelith needs some extra cash.

ooh--I like the idea of a monitor. i gave money awhile back, but should probably just set up a regular donation schedule.
(so we are assuming there is a post-knodge future, yes?)

I'd love to be able to do a graphic of some kind, but it's really more trouble than it's worth - I'd have to update it daily in tiny imcrements.
