Well, it needn’t accomplish the negative – It’s not a list of people who don’t support the community, it’s a list of people who do. As I see it, $100 a month = 40 members at the most, so picking out one of the other 870 people who post here but don’t send cash is going to be a bit difficult to justify.
It’s more of a ‘well done – you’re a good person’ thing. The two sites I contribute to already operate a ‘thank you for the help’ list of contributors. One does it once a month, the other regularly updates a list. Seems fair enough. What have we got to hide hey?
Buuutttt….I’d also be way interested to see who’s not contributing. 40 people out of what I see as at least 100 regular posters? And seeing as it sounds like Tom Coates NEEDS our help to keep this site going. A case of putting your money where your mouth is!
I’d be interested to see who’s not contributing, but not for the point of picking someone out as a freebie-jumping bigmouth – Ian Adonai made a quite reasonable request that membership of the site be conditional on fees AS WELL as invitation, and Tom made the decision to not make that membership fee-conditional, so I see a thank-you list as a way of working around this. Not a public naming and shaming, because it’s directed towards doing good, not bad.
But really, we’ve introduced ways of paying with every credit/debit card under the sun, and also introduced ways of also paying with cheques, postal orders, etc, so there’s no reason that someone who owns a computer, and pays for internet access and telephone line rental, or an hour in an Internet cafĂ©, can’t contribute a measly $3 a month. Tom has paid for the site for years and years, and now he’s finally asking for help, but, quite realistically not making membership of the site fee conditional to back up the ideological aims, I think we SHOULD be doing our utmost to make sure Tom DOESN’T have to operate on a purely pragmatic basis.
So please, put the list up. As a contributor I’d like to see who my fellow contributors are! |
