Should I buy a PLaystation 2?

Or should I not? Or should I buy an X-box. Or should I not? I don't actually really have any money, but I have way more money at the moment than I've had for a very very long time, and although I've got loads and loads of work to do and all that shit, I can't help being lured consolewards....

Hmn.

What games do you want to play? The console market is so wide and wonderful at the moment, that's the easiest way to answer the question. My answer usually comes down to "Sega Games" which doesn't help, because Monkey Ball's only on GC, the wondrous VF4 is only on PS2, and Jet Set Radio Future's only on Xbox. See? But if you KNOW there are platform specific games you want, then it's easy to make the decision. The GC has some TOP quality stuff on it, and the future lineup is superb. The Xbox isn't exactly bad, and the PS2, though swamped with titles, of which many will be crap, does have its highspots.

I'd hold on on the PS2 front - there SHOULD, godwilling, be a price drop soon. It plays DVDs OK from what I've heard (I'm considering one just because it's the only cheap DVD player that will go vertically, which is the only way there's room for one by my telly at home).

So: maybe? It's got more good games than it used to, the games aren't too tough secondhand, and it will play DVDs and almost all old PS1 games. But the Gamecube's smaller, cheaper, and funkier, and the Xbox does have some mighty impressive stuff unique to it - if you want the hard disk, and the big (but not as unwieldy as people make out) controller, and the large box, and Microsoft in your front room, then go for it.

The Xbox does have Halo, though. Which irks me. Can't I get Halo any other way? Evidently not.

Actually, I'm fairly certain that Halo is coming out on the PC. Of course, that's not very helpful if your computer is still being powered by a little mouse running in a wheel.

I'm getting a PS2 for now. It's got most of the games I'm interested in, but somehow I've got to get the Gamecube and X-box.

I think the decision really depends on what you're going to use it for. Strictly single-player stuff? Go for the PS2. Going to invite people over to play? Gamecube. Wanna play online? I'd go with the X-box.

Well, everyone WAS fairly certain Halo was coming out on PC.

But then Bungie got interviewed last month and they said "well, we'd love to do PC Halo, but we're currently working on more Xbox Halo stuff. It's not even on the cards yet - we'd like to do it, but just not at the moment".

So it's probably going console exclusive. They lied to us, kids.

What? So the PC gamers are once again being shafted? Big surprise there.

No matter what people say, the X-box is nothing more than a computer. A PC conversion really wouldn't take all that much time.

...it should be a PC game...but in fact Bungie used to make software for us macheads until some power/money got thrown around. PS2 is the way...then Gamecube, then X-box. Had a discussion with Paleface tonite to this effect. There's not choosing one over the other...it's all about timing...

Yes you should buy a Playstation 2--for me!

There are several ways of looking at this.

Buying a console for games, in which case the PS2 wins hands down.
Buying the newest, most advanced piece of technology, i.e the Xbox.

OR

Giving your money to the company you think will rule the world better (and make no mistake, that's what going on here) in which case SONY is the lesser of two evils - would you REALLY trust Microsofts security protocals on your VR stasis tank? Didn't think so.

Micro$oft looses money on every Xbox sold, so don't feel too guilty about that, just make sure all your games are cop.....uh, backups.

I actually plan on mailing funds to the software developers directly.

Ooohhh, speaking of which:

After years of battling security leaks in its software, most recently the Outlook Express exploit that allowed the Klez.E virus to become so widespread, Microsoft could have a new security problem with its Xbox console.

An MIT graduate student discovered the secret in the system's boot-up sequence by building a custom "wiretapping" board that intercepted the data transmitted to and from the central processor during the startup sequence. From there, he was able to figure out the necessary steps to bypass this process, which are detailed in the paper published on the experiment.

Bypassing the lockout code allows any code to be run on the system, and could conceivably be the basis of a modification chip allowing pirates to run illegal copies of Xbox software on the machine. Furthermore, it allows interested parties to run other operating systems, such as Windows competitor Linux.

Potentially even more damaging to Microsoft's reputation than the lockout bypass, however, is the discovery that the unique serial number of each system is potentially accessible during connectivity to the Internet using Microsoft's Xbox Live service. Unscrupulous hackers could theoretically access user-specific information while they were connected, the report concludes.

So far, Microsoft has not responded to or commented on the paper.

Actually they have commented on the paper. They gave him the greenlight to post his findings.

There's an article in the Register
here

This is his personal site where he talks about his tinkering.

It's really a question which you should buy first. I've had a Playstation 2 for about 6 months now . . . gone through the whole GTA3 and FFX rotation. Spent some time with Jak and Daxter, Baldur's Gate (very cool) and some other decent games. And now my eyes are turned longingly toward the Cube and X box. And just in time for the price cut . . . hmmmm

I would start with the PS2. GTA and FF are both phenomenal.
