So, anyone else picked this up yet? I was praying HMV wouldn't be shut on Bank Holiday - after all, Mondays is new release day.
I really, really, really like it. Yes, it's Shadow, and sounds like pretty much a logical progression from Endtroducing - "Fixed Income" could have come off there, but the later tracks are more of a development. He's certainly getting handier with the technology.
It's a shame that since that first albu, there's been a lot of bandwagon jumping and of course many people influenced by Shadow, because that's the only reason this record sounds ever-so-slightly familiar. I'd still agree with most of the press reviews that agree it may just be more of the same, but Shadow does it far better than most.
Highlights? Monosylabik, obviously, but also Giving Up The Ghost, the Mongrel... Meets His Maker combo, and I have a great softspot for the Lateef the Truth Speaker voiced Mashing on the Motorway. It's all great, they just jumped out. But yeah. Happy Paleface. It's making me itch to get into the studio and noodle with the sampler, which I've never had a long enough chance to do since I got my gear fixed. And that, for me, is always the best sign of good music - it gets me wanting to go off and play. |
