A new board to facilitate magic working(s) (rather than talk)

I don't know how many of you will remember the formation of a the Magickal Order of Barbelith on MSN Communities.

well... apathy reigned there in part because of the difficulty of working out MSN Communities so I suggested that as an alternative a board exist here for magic workings as opposed to theorizing, for posting sigils for charge and for the ever-popular "magical pleas for help".

Good idea, Ria.

Of course, you're all welcome to pop over to my personal board and post your sigils'n'stuff in the appropriate forum. (Tho' I warn you- I rule there. With a rod of iron. *grins evilly*)

You can find me at thee big acidic mudshow. The forum for sigils and spells is The Cauldron.

The same argument people used to argue against a gaming forum can be used here.

Only a limited number of people would use it.

Why not just use the forum we have? Instead of saying "We need a new forum to discuss actually doing workings.." Post a message in the current forum saying, "I have an idea for a working that will accomplish this. Anybody interested?"

This (i.e. magickal workings, if fairly minor ones) already seems to happen, and seems to work fine in the general "Magick" forum, doesn't it? The threading of subjects seems to keeps things from being disrupted or disruptive.

I had an email exchange with "The Fool" on the subject of sigil construction as a result of one such thread a little bit back...

I forgot to make the analogy to the Creation forum: on one section you might talk about literature or art but here you actually make it.

as for the magic forum which already exists I like the thought of knowing that I can simply use that separate forum without wading through the kind of material which turns up there.

You'll have to be more specific. What exactly is it that you're after here?

Do you think a board on Barbelith soley dedicated to group magickal workings (ie a cyber-coven) will be any less apathetic? Personally, I suspect it's the nature of the beast; It's much easier to slack off with an online coven than with a flesh and blood coven, and the opportunities for pisstaking & charlatanism are far greater.

I suppose what we'd be talking about is something in the Participation. I kind of don't really understand how that's different from what's currently going on in the Magick forum.

There really isn't any difference at all. The only thing that'd be different is all the "A succubus is trying to jump my bones- help!" topics would be in the Magick forum we have now and the "Let's get together and do this spiffy new ritual" topics would be in the new Magick Workings forum.

As I said before, there's no need for it. Just make use of the forum we have. You just have to take a few extra seconds to scroll past the "Charge my sigil" and "I need magickal help" threads.

As Ria said, there are problems with accessing and posting on the MOB site. There has been apathy due to this. If posting gets too difficult and you continually lose your posts well, I can't blame anyone for getting fustrated and forgetting the whole thing.

The idea for MOB is to create an intimate group that will be reliable and respectful to each other while performing on-going workings that are agreed upon. The work is a little different from what is done on the Magick board because it would require a committed group to, for example, create an Astral Meeting Point or ongoing workshops and practices for the group's work. This has to be done by committed people in order to keep the integrity of the work already done. If others who are not interested start posting their comments and criticisms or say they want to partake yet don't, it can disturb the energy of a working. With a dedicated group, you know who is partaking and who is not (at least in theory) and energy is focused.

Now, having explained that, I have to commend Ria for trying to come up with a solution that will remedy this. I think it would be a great idea to have a special place where people here can partake in a working by perhaps, signing up for it and committing themselves for the duration of the magickal work. Some magickal work takes time to develop and needs to be nutured. This would be an ideal situation for these types of workings.

I have also tried to think about how this would work here on the Barbelith board without being exclusive. I think this might pose a problem. By creating a space for those who wish to this kind of work away from this board, I thought it would overcome this problem. The group would be less exclusive (to those who are uninterested) and more inclusive (to those who wanted to try it). Thus, no one will be left out, they choose not to take part. I really do not know how to create this here without it becoming something it is not, (either Barbelith or MOB).

There are people who are interested in this type of dedicated interaction. Some of the MOB members do not have difficulty with MSN, I have had very little myself, and they will perhaps stay on with the Order. However, if this could be done here it would be wonderful, but, not at the high cost of causing further fracture to the Barbelith Community.

Thanks again Ria for your support and ideas. Maybe, with the help of others, we can come up with some solutions together. Any ideas?

I can't even find a "Magickal Order of Barbelith" on MSN Communities, US or UK. Does anyone have a pointer to it?

actually I couldn't find the group on MSN communities either when I tried looking for it.

and yes Tom I did think that the new forum could go in the Participation.

I don't know if this link will work for non-members, but....

No, but it offered to allow me to sign up as a member. I guess if any managers are still reading the emails there, I might even make it in...

Well, Yahoogroups.com is pretty spiffy if MSN proves tobe a problem. Yahoogroups gobbled up e-groups.com and all their code a ways back, and it a suprisingly useful free listproc.

as to the apathy problem perhaps we could sub-divide within the larger groups of four or five to provide constant support and/or hectoring to actually get work done.
