is anyone interested in the celebration of punk 25 years on, at the national film theatre in london? for me, the highlights will be penelope spheeris' hilarious look at the american punk scene circa 1977, 'the decline of western civilisation' and the film 'women in punk' which apart from the obvious, explores how punk related to gay men and lesbians. the event that has me practically hysterical with excitement is 'killing time' - two films by crass' gee vaucher, with members of the band doing some spoken word followed by a discussion. crass had a profound influence on my life and i am pacing up and down waiting for the nft's box office to open so i can get tix.

if you want to see the full programme, it's here: www.bfi.org.uk

What's so funny about The Decline of Western Civilization (the 1st one from 1980)? I'd figure you'd be the last one to find a film with quotes like "Next time don't bite so hard when I cum, sweetheart" to be funny, sfd. You sure you're not confusing it with "Decline... Pt. II, The Metal Years"? Now that was funny.

as i recall, the film is a not too po-faced look at the los angeles punk scene and includes a funny interview with black flag and a psychologist seriously analysing *why* 'the kids' need to do the pogo. it had a roomful of old punks falling about laughing.

i did feature the film as a highlight of the festival. it's one of my favourites and penelope spheeris rocks.

Can't make it now i'm afraid...Shame i really fancied it as well...Have a good time though...As a slight compensation though i picked up Penny Rimbauds' AutoBiography 'Shibboleth' today...Have you read it SFD?...

I like a man who never smiles because he sees smiling 'as a form of hysterity'...Ha Ha

shibboleth was very good. obviously the crass stories were of major interest, but rimbauld's really put his money where his mouth is pretty much all his life. get nice and comfy, and have a pot of your favourite brew next to you, cos you might want to read the whole lot in one go.

his other book - diamond signature - i found quite unreadable.

shame you're not going to be there. will give a report on the event next week.
