Three young Amish men have been charged in a late-night buggy race in the Town of Leon in which a collision with a fourth buggy left a horse dead.

NPR story about "Devil's Playground", a documentary about Amish teens getting drunk, dealing dope & sowin' wild oats. And here's Cinemax's site for "Devil's Playground".

Here's a very thorough story from Wired.com on the use of technology (such as cell phones) in the Amish community.

Thanks for the links, that third one about the selective use of modern tech is especially interesting. Might be worth its own thread in the Lab, using the Amish example as a starting point for discussing alternatives to the "all or nothing" view of technology and progress - push ever onward or fall back to the dark ages. Could there be a point, say, at which we decide that we've got enough tech and knowledge to keep us alive, healthy and safe that we don't need to plow any more resources into further R & D?

the whooterians (sp?) are a very devout sect, similar to the amish, but they realized that tech is ok, so they have laptops, golf carts and cel phones inside thier communities

they make really cool playgroup equipment and blocks and stuff
