Thanks for the links, that third one about the selective use of modern tech is especially interesting. Might be worth its own thread in the Lab, using the Amish example as a starting point for discussing alternatives to the "all or nothing" view of technology and progress - push ever onward or fall back to the dark ages. Could there be a point, say, at which we decide that we've got enough tech and knowledge to keep us alive, healthy and safe that we don't need to plow any more resources into further R & D?
the whooterians (sp?) are a very devout sect, similar to the amish, but they realized that tech is ok, so they have laptops, golf carts and cel phones inside thier communities
they make really cool playgroup equipment and blocks and stuff
