So I get home from my dole interview today and what do I see? One of my beloved housemates chatting with two blokes in suits outside the front door, frantically but subtly gesturing for me not to come in. Yep, after five beautiful weeks our gorgeous squatted bank is once more an empty vessel for property speculation. They wouldn't even give us a couple of days to move our stuff out - overnight or, the cops threatened, they'd charge us with trespass. Which they can't do, but whatever.

Pretty sad, scatty, could use cheering up... but already looking at a new place.

i *do* admire squatters and respect the squatting ideal, but having been involved years ago, the insecurity - situations such as the one you've just described - was too much for me. i now pay a very cheap rent to a nice landlady, but it hasn't always been this way.

the 'don't worry about it, we're all going to be annihilated soon anyway' tack probably won't cheer you up, will it?

best of luck finding a new abode.

heh. it's found.

right now i'm in the local indymedia lab, which is part of the warehouse where we're all staying overnight, so we can move into our new place tomozza.

but the kids have just started blasting the amelie soundtrack, which has full-on associations, so i am outta here.

love youse all.

okay, i know i haven't been posting here much lately but really, i expected at least a few expressions of sympathy...

I usually don't reply to sympathy threads because so many others jump on before you can blink, but as a fellow who has fought eviction, I give you all the love i can muster without charging a sigil. I found a quarter in the tub yesterday, and Crunchy, I dedicate that odd occurance to you!

I wasn't sure whether it was all over or not. On a fast read it looked like the crisis had come and gone in 13 minutes. Anyway, sucks that y'all got kicked out; squatting in a bank had me grinning all day. And here's to finding a longer term spot just as, or more, comfy.

Have as much sympathy as you want- I have quite a lot. Good luck with the homefinding- from personal experience, that sucks.

I think the problem is that you explained that you had an alternative too quickly, thus short-circuiting outpourings of love. Still, moving is a traumatic thing, so huggleschnoogles for Crunchy.

well i am spacking out a bit at the moment - wishing i knew what the fuck was going on. there are weird cryptic messages and stuff... the house wants to stay together and the place we have our eye on is a bit iffy. well, i don't know. one of the kids said stuff about having found out who the owners are, and that it could be good, or it could be bad... won't tell me what until we're all together so he doesn't have to keep doing it. but i'm pretty sure at least some of us are going to stay there tonight with a bare minimum of stuff, looking to move in tomozza.

homefinding is much better if you don't need permission to move in, though...

[off-topic] At least you found a quarter, Moriarty. All I found was a huge 1 1/2" roach/centipede/dead bug of some sort in my bathtub today. [/off-topic]

Lotsa luck finding some digs, Crunchy. There's always the Seven Seas if things don't work out....

Sorry, Crunchy. I didn't post for the reasons ynh mentions. V. shitty that you got evicted... hope all works out for you...

Oh, eggplants v. welcome.

Still without proper housing, hopefully a situation which will be remedied by tomozza. Sympathetic outpourings still more than welcome...

Bad luck, old thing - I have the utmost respect and admiration for you for squatting in the first place, and it absolutely sucks that you got evicted. Hope the new place is full of goodness and shiny things and makes you happier and healthier & all sorts of things. Would have said so sooner but wasn't around.

Good luck with the future, every act of resistance and defiance is worthwile. The current squat I'm staying is is still going on, no problems, and this saturday we're opening up a squatted social centre in the north of Helsinki, we'll probably try to keep it squatted for as long as possible, but in the end probably end up legalizing it, gig-space, café, computers, whatnot.

We're not alone.

many good wishes your way, including hopes for no "huge 1 1/2" roach/centipede/dead bug of some sort" in your new bathtub

I have a new place, now. Currently it is way over-crowded as the eight of us who lived in the old, giant place try to squeeze into the new, small place. But it is charming, and sooner or later I will have a nice big bedroom all to myself.

Good luck with the social centre, BioD - I was just up in Sydney at the Midnight Star, an old Lebanese community centre and, before that, roller rink, which is now a squatted social centre. It's pretty amazing - giant, with elabourate chandeliers and lots of pastel pink. It was like living in a Claes Oldenburg (sp?) cake sculpture. They are holding it well despite some police hassles and anyone in Sydders should check it out.
