America is a great IDEA for a country. The freedoms in the Constitution are amazing for a document of its type, and the idea that the people can decide to dissolve the whole government and start over is a great one that I would actually love to see invoked.
The American people CAN be kind, decent and caring toward both each other and the other countries of the world when they aren't distracted by their own navel gazing, waste generating bad influences. I also think that, for the most part, the average American is either a decent enough person or wants to be a decent enough person.
After a bit of struggle and fighting, the US tends to try to make the world a better place. They don't succeed and their ideas aren't the best, but aside from the pure selfishness that seems so much a part of everything, the people of the US geniunely woudl be happy if everyone had the kind of life they have access to.
The execution of all of these things falls pretty short, and our corporate culture has done more harm than anyone in the US realizes, but I think having the US as the only super-power is better than some of the alternatives. |
