The death of Irony

Such a statement is ironic. The most ironic thing about irony is how many people just don't get it.

Starship Troopers anyone?

Launching a war against 'evil'? Editing the towers out of friends? Pulling the Spider-Man trailer? This is the United States getting 'serious'?

In light of the bombings I've become more ironic than ever. Every morning, walking to work, I imagine planes colliding with the skyskrapers through my own eyes - I still wouldn't belive it. I'd run for my life, but I'd be running from a television screen.

From the article:

Here is one dictionary definition of irony: "Incongruity between actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result."

My dictionary (Oxford American Desk) sez:

Humorous or sarcastic use of language of a different or opposite meaning; ill-timed arrival of an event or circumstance that is in itself desirable.

It's tough to be properly ironic when even dictionaries can't agree on what irony is!

I think we should all just give in to Alanis Morissette's demands.

The girl who wrote the most ironic song ever written? Hell, yes. She frightens me.

I actually didn't mean to be ironic (was it then? ), and I agree with article in that silencing humour is not the way to deal with our grief.

But "irony" is one of those words that gets incredibly over-intellectualized and surrounded by hot air, and I hate using words when I'm not sure what they mean.

"A traffic jam when you're all ready late?
That's not ironic.
Ironic is when there's a traffic jam when you're all ready late, and you're the traffic comissioner, on your way to a meeting with the city where you intend to demonstrate that the traffic situation is well in hand. THAT'S ironic."

there are many definations of irony. Dramatic Irony, for example, is when the audience knows something more than the characters -- often used in thrillers to build suspense.

here --this page has definitions of the many faces of irony: http://www.clearcf.uvic.ca/writersguide/Pages/LTIrony.html

Think you've got it tough? Try living in the House of Irony. My roommates and I are considering changing the name of our domicile because of all this hoopla.

My vote is for the House of Perogies.
