Before, UNOCAL ran an avid campaign to support their extended flirting with factions in Afghanistan, including the Taliban. Their primary goal in this media campaign was to explain that they are not knowingly supporting the oppression of women. However, this release is in fact a notice of project suspension.
They're suspending the project until "peace and stability" return to Afghanistan, and until a U.S. & U.N. recognized government is in place.
Heavy pro-pipeline P.R., though.
Afterwards, UNOCAL appears to be making a bit of a strategic withdrawl from the issue. A lot of rehash, but one thing they do not reiterate is the prior sales pitch.
UNOCAL, of course, has quite the environmental record.
All I know is, somebody's going to profit from this whole thing. |
