The Mooney Suzuki (and you thought retro garage rock was a bad idea)

How fucking great are they on a scale of 9.8 to 10?

They had myself and 3 other people cutting a heck of a lot of rug when they played in Leicester last night, and I'm usually kind of shy when it comes to dancing at gigs..

Such glorious rocking I've not witnessed in .. months.

Particularly liked the guitarist's trick of striding around the audience whispering in the ear of every girl in sight whilst playing absurd Slash-esque solos.

Maybe not worth starting a new thread on, but favourable things have been said of The Mooney Suzuki on Barbelith in the past, and, er, I just feel like giving them some great big hype.

And I got a signed CD.

Haven't heard the band yet: I love the name, but at the same time I can't help thinking it's so absurdly in-joke-y that it cannot bode well for the quality of the music.

They're not bad, they're better than most of the new crop of garage bands coming out nowadays. Rizla, if you like these guys, you should check out Thee Milkshakes, trust me, you'll love it.

Nor have I, but then I can't imagine I'd care for the music on CD (vs. seeing a live show).

I thought it was a clever name, too. For those wondering what the name means, it's from the two singers for the German band Can.

I've known about the Mooney Suzuki for a while, but I don't really care for them, none of their songs really grab me. Which is a bit upsetting, cos I actually WANT to like them. I just don't feel it...

I know what you mean .. if I'd just heard their CD I wouldn't have been particularly thrilled .. it's pretty fun lo-fi retro garage rock, but nothing new, and there's a million bands that do a similar thing to an acceptable standard..

..but live they just ABSOLUTELY RULED .. one of the most energetic / wild / just plain fun live performances I've ever seen.. impossible to explain why they were so much better than all the other bands of their ilk .. THEY JUST ARE.
