Is there any point to doing a BA in Illustration? If not, what should I do?

Well? Anyone ever done illustration at college? I ask because my job allows me to take time off to get educalated. But it's got to be something likely to "further my career" in some respect (even if it means a completely different *cough* career to what I'm in now, ie it can't just be for fun.

So, erm, if anyone has experience of getting a job that they wouldn't have done had they not done a course in something visual-arts related, lemme know. My other option is an MA in multi-media type thingies (webternet design, music etc), though I'm worried it'll be more theory than practice.

Well Im not sure what you should do, but I was in Illustration & Design in college and it wasnt mostly theory. It was a lot of tricks and tips type. But most of the theory was stuff that just happend to come up as we were doing our assignment and the teacher would comment on what was done wrong and that may have led to a theory lecture..curves in legs run opposite front to back, distance is represented by lightness ect..little things like that. But then again that could only be my college. Your best bet is to look at different illustration colleges and talk to the proffessors to see what they have to offer. Good luck anyways.

Dammit, you should get paid a decent wage just for existing and thinking up groovy ideas!

Went through a design program that featured interactive art and illustration as strengths. Having a degree may be something to chuck beyond initial appearances, but if it's a good school, it helps you build a worthwhile portfolio. My old school, Tyler School of Art, was well known for the quality of work. Most kids coming from other places didn't have a chance when it came to presentation.

So...um...if you're gonna do it, do it right. Otherwise, work like a madman and figure out your consistant method for how you solve problems with illustration. After that it's marketing. And right now, there are so few jobs...prepare for the worst.

I've been saying that for years! I should get a lottery grant. How much can it cost for someone to stay in the bath all year, eh? Hot water and bubbles, that's all I'm asking for.
