When I arrived on Barbelith, one of the things that struck me was the high degree of debate here. I enjoyed the cut and thrust as dynamic intellects locked horns at the cutting edge of postmodern thought. Watching people who went to more school than me getting all stroppy around each other was truly a wonderful thing.

And now look at you. Three threads, given over to Ninjas v Pirates. One of them in the Creation. One of them numbering seven pages long. Other threads, hitherto free of the contagation, have now succumbed. Even fiction-suits are not immune: names have been altered to convey the ninjaesque or piratical status of the individual wearing them. And who started it? Who infected you all with this pernicious psychic virus?

Erm.

That's sort of the point. I got really worried when I saw people actually trying to deconstruct it. And accusing the ninjas of elitism.

You see, this is what happens when you unleash a virulent meme on the board. That's why I have tried to say absolutely nothing of any interest or worth at any point over the past year.

It's also why I have tried not to feed the meme with a ninja or pirate declaration either way. I know, in my heart, that I am a [????] and that is enough...

The whole ninja-pirate thing is more profound than you realise (how Derrida). Tom's infected, Baudrillard's infected, we're all infected.

It's not just some fantasy, it's about self perception. It's a one line myers-briggs without the bullshit attitude.

But more importantly, it's about flipping out and grog.

The pirates and ninja thing is nothingmore than a childish Nyah-nyah-nyah between people who enjoy a little laugh amongst all this debate and discussion. I personally dont think you have any reason to ask for forgiveness. But if you want it, I'll give it to you anyway,..now go foward and sin no more.

Not to worry...been thinking about this lately myself. Seems that most things here have been relating to sexual/gender issues (if not the current pirate/ninja lines) lately but some things that are of other interest are happening out there. In due time...plus, there aren't modern day manifestations of these peoples...if anyone's noticed, they're all long gone...

Whereas pirates seems to be the preserve of rather mediocre sports teams. Dread pirate I may be, but there's no way I'm playing hockey wearing a big floppy hat and pantaloons. Might be okay if I'm allowed to keep me cutlass.

Special Forces? Ninjas? Do you mean the Nightstalkers?

There are pirates out there. You've still got a few traditional sail the high seas plunder ships types out there, but mostly they're software pirates and business types.
