I need some trance/techno recommendations here, preferably of things I can download (or buy...) but tell me about any artists resident in London clubs that I should already know about. I'm a complete newbie in this genre at the moment. Except with Paul Van Dyke. thanku.

Fuck trance. It's shite.

Instead, find a record shop that's selling tickets and go see Richie Hawtin play at Lost on Jubilee weekend - it'll rock your little socks off, and it'll be techno. As in detroit. As in good.

If you really insist on pursuing trance further, good luck to ya. I don't think anyone here knows anything about it though...

I do insist on pursuing trance further - spirit of research ya know? But if it's that uniformly shite I won't be pursuing for very long. Cheers for the recommendation.

Lyra's right: trance really is the bastard child of techno and bindis.

Eat Static - especially Science of the Gods. Their last two albums - Crash and Burn, In the Nude have gotten a lot softer but if you like trance it might still float your boat.
Dave the drummer and the Liberator DJs are based in London so you can probably get a chance to see them play regular.
Personally I prefer Hard/Industrial tekno (with a K) and I have developed a prejudice against trance. I still have a soft spot for Acid Techno which you can find plenty of in London. Shit Acid Techno was practically born in London.
Don't know what else to say - you'll develop your own tastes.
Fuck all the superstar Djs.

Shit Acid Techno was practically born in London.

Agreed. Unless there's a comma in there (ie: 'Shit, acid techno...')

Er.. there's a big wide playing field of techno and trance out there.

Personally, I have a soft spot for trance, but trance released about eight years ago. Cosmic Baby's albums, stuff on MFS records from Berlin and Sven Vath's Accident in Paradise all still have a special place in my heart.

Techno-wise? Richie Hawtin, Green Velvet, Jeff Mills, Ron Trent, Dave Clarke; all great artists and great DJs (well, I don't know about Ron Trent as a DJ but you have to hear 'Altered States' by him; one of the best techno records ever...)

I'm with Lyra on this one, Richie Hawtin rocks in a distrubingly funky way. Go see him and be inspired.

And pursue trance no further. It died in 96 and its been necrophila ever since...

I can't point you in the direction of any good trance, for the reasons given above and the fact that I know nothing about it. If you're looking for techno though, you could do worse than to download some live DJ sets from Fuse. Checking out different DJs is the best way to find stuff you like when you don't know too much about the music - and every halfway decent techno DJ eventually plays Fuse. Its a Brussels club, and each Friday they broadcast two hours or so of the previous Saturday night headliner's set on Belgium's Radio 21. Some kind individual(s) has been encoding the sets as MP3s and sharing the files.

Search on Audiogalaxy or WinMX (or whatever) for 'live @ fuse' and you'll be inundated with quality DJ sets. Try Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Jeff Mills, Ben Sims, DJ T-1000, DJ Hell, Marco Carola, Heiko Laux, Technasia, The Advent and the aforementioned Richie Hawtin. Find something you like (the kind of techno Carl Craig plays is miles away from Ben Sims) and we'll recommend more of the same...

Richie Hawtin definitely rocks! His Plastikman stuff is simply amazing and the Converge cd is pure genius: like being in the middle of the desert at night.I remember drifting off to sleep to the Converge track on a May afternoon years ago when John Peel was playing it on his show and just waking up as it was finishing up and it was such an amazing thing!

Trance: I would recommend BT-he is absolutely great though he has become a film score whore lately but definitely worth seeking even if only his first album IMA(1995)is trance-y.But ESCM (1997) & Movement in Still Life (1999&2000, depending which version you buy)are really cool as well although they contain little trance. His music is very breakbeat lately. I don't know; try him. Try d/l "Quark","Divinity", "Flaming June" (one of the best dance songs ever, IMHO),"Giving Up the Ghost",his mix of B-Tribe's Nanita (BT's Voltaire Organica mix).

Salt Tank are also good. "Eugina" is their most well known track and I think their best. I have their Science & Nature album which is quite good in places.

Does anyone know which stores are selling tickets to Lost?

While I'm here, do any of you anti-trance folk have any room in your heart for psy-trance? Tsuyoshi Suzuki anyone?

Thanks a lot everyone for all your help!
Sorry I needed to pick your brains, I tried to look for myself and ask around but lack of experience was thwarting me.
I'm working my way through your suggestions, got as far as Green Velvet so far. Can't really decide between ppl at the moment and it's hardly fair to try. If I had to pick ppl to continue with though it would be Eat Static and Richie Hawtin.
thanks again

If you want some proper fucking tekno mp3s try these sites.

http://www.headfuk.org/
http://www.zetemkaa.net/music/MP3
http://www.striking-wave.com/

There all crazy english, dutch and french soundsystems respectively. Might be a bit hardcore for you but you never know, check it out anyway.
Personally, I like Richie Hawtin and I love Eat Static but I can't be fecking arsed going to clubs or paying silly prices tickets and I much prefer the overall buzz of free parties. I found out yesterday that I'm playing (Live set not decks) in a derelict church somewhere in the wicklow mountains at the weekend. I haven't actually played in front of people for at least 7 months so I reckon half a bottle of buckfast and a few spliffs will be in order. I can't fucking wait.

Free parties great in theory but....

1) Vomit streaked crusties who try to hug you

2) One-armed gabber djs on ketamine (sounds as bad as it sounds)

3) Unavailability of decent drugs

4) Heavy male bias

all mitigate against 'em... Last one I went to I caught a cold sore off a crack pipe. yum.

I really don't know what sort of parties you've been to but I pretty much always enjoy myself a hell of a lot more. Pretty much every weekend last summer I was at squat parties over in Holland. The crowd you'd get at them were better than any clubs and I used to get fucking excellent drugs all the time. That's a classic about the Djs on K but just as long as its their own records they're destroying. I used to meet a hell of a lot more sound girls over there than I ever do in any clubs/pubs/gigs here. In recent weeks the scene has started up again here in Ireland and if I don't set foot in a nghtclub for the next year I'll be happy. As for your cold sore problem I'd just suggest bringing your own pipe. I prefer the music at free parties more though I have been to a couple of trance parties and still enjoyed myself. Its cool being able to actually meet the people that make the records you like.

I spent a year or so being a big pants wearing raver
The only trance i recall the name of that i really enjoyed would be Deepsky--they put on a great show and i dig their hip beats.

If you want some darkwave/industrial techno/pop type stuff try And One or VNV Nation

they should all be available for DL through kazaa or similar

I know, much as I loathe gabba, the intimacy of the scene was really cool. Down south, most gabba gigs were small, low-key affairs and the chances were you'd all end up downing the beers w/ Lenny Dee at the end of the night. Very unpretentious.

Hee hee. In scotland very different - 10,000 scots, dutch and geordies in a tent near the airport. Geordies all wore newcastle utd strips with "Lenny Dee is god" written on the back. Scots all wore white Kappa shellies. Dutch all wore sunhats and orange clothing. Approximately 70% boys. DJ Rap let me kiss her but Dye Witness told me to fuck off. With dutch accents.

What larks.

Ok here we go, I've gotten out of techno lately, it's just too flat and cold for me, I've tried Dave Clarke
and Richie Hawtin
but to no avail. I'm off to see Jeff Mills
sunday week and if he can't keep me intrested in techno no one can.

But for trance, almost all chart trance is the most horrible thing you'll ever subject yourself to. All that gatecrasher stuff is just to light for me. There's just nothing to shake your ass to.
My Bag is Psy trance, The bastard son of Trance and Techno and for me it's dancing joy.
The best seem to be astral projection
, One of the hardest but still with the sci fi samples and the euphoric bits. Lovely.
Hallucinogen
, A lot darker but some good stuff. LSD rocks.
Transwave More techno than trance but still good dancing fun.
Man with no name. More great dancing. Teleport kicks ass.

That should get you started and check out the also liked lists.

I found out yesterday that I'm playing (Live set not decks) in a derelict church somewhere in the wicklow mountains at the weekend.

That wouldn't happen to be in the forest up behind Greystones by any chance? Overlooking Devil's Glen? My younger brother and his mates were among the ones who first started bringing decks and a generator up there a couple of years back. I remember it being an amazing location...far enough away from anywhere that the cops were unlikely to show up, surprisingly easy to get to and an underground room for setting up in if it started to rain...

And if you want to hear some more techno (and other stuff besides) you could always check out Weatherhall at my mate's clubnight, Sabbath (see 'Plugging the Twart' in 'The Gathering'). I can't do the link thing. Someone PM me w/ the necessary pens and pencils. Please.

I saw Astral Projection once. Blew my fucking head. Good shite. Every once in awhile Oakenfold has a good run, though he's mostly intolerable otherwise. Fuse rocked, I saw him once too. Great set.

My recommendation if you like trance, look for deep progressive house instead. Its got what you like in trance, but being house, its inherently superior blueroomproject.com is one name that springs to mind.
