Ok, so I'm here in NY baby. There's so much to do here, and I'm already feeling a little bit overwhelmed. Let's hear about the places that would appeal to me and all that. What should I do here? Anyone nice enough to show me around? Some sort of psychic train ride of the underground?

You know, you owe me a PM now.

And, lie... An explanation of what you were doing in Tennessee for a month or so.

How do you get waylayed in Tennessee for a month?!

It's really quite easy to get waylayed in Tennessee. I thought I'd only be here a couple years. Ha! This October will make it 10 years. 10 years! Good god.

try the mars bar on second and houston, one of the last bastions of the true alcholic punk rock stink underground left in the east village.

actually, i'm not even sure there's a sign, sometimes "mars" or "marz" is spray painted over the door, it's on the north / west side of 2nd ave right before houston.

i used to spend many a night there until 5 in the morning, and only occasionally got into fist fights with various members of the aggro rock nyc universe.

rage, you're under 21, aren't you? otherwise i'd reccomend barmacy, the korova milk bar and bar-on-a. hmm... the raven bar lets under 18s in, and it's not a bad little place. it's next door to korova. you should probably post this in the gathering and see if lionheart and enamon want to hook up with you :]

Tennessee seems like one of the easiest places to make it in. Ever. I think I passed by Marz last night, though I could be mistaking. I'm 18, but I have an ID that says otherwise.

A friend of mine throws a party every Thursday at a place called Abaya on Houston between A and B. It was fun, slumped, and has been picking up again. Last week we went around the corner to Guernica afterwards and at 3 AM there was still really good music downstairs and lots of people dancing.

I like Rue B on B btwn 11 and 12 for brunch, and anyplace on the northside of Tompkins Square Park (Ave A btwn... what, 6 and 10?) for doing nothing with an afternoon.

The speakeasy in W'burg that sold cocaine got raided, I hear, so I won't tell you where it was.

Cokies! yeah, that was a crazy place. 6 in the morning it would be jammed pack, and look to the untrained eye like an other bar except that everyone was SCREAMING at the top of their lungs at one another. that's another place i got punched in the jaw... by a 60 year old puerto rican guy after i kissed him on the cheek at 10 in the morning following a 3 hour conversation about ufos and the elohim.

ahh... nyc. i really don't get punched enough anymore now that i don't live there.

I'd recommend the Gotham Comedy Club, 34 West 22nd Street.
I went there on a Saturday night, and laughed until I ached.
Their website is, unsurprisingly, www.gothamcomedyclub.com

Empire State building is still the coolest touristy thing to do...

The Metropolatian Museum or ART is Magnificant!!!... butts up into Central Park which is a great walk... on the otherside of the park is the Museum of natural History...

The Bronx Botanical Gardens is pretty sweet...

I'm seconding the MoMA - it was absolute rawk. I got such a kick out of Carl Anderson's 144 Lead Squares that I thought I'd never leave.

Apparently, when I was in New York I was a block away from Times Square and I never had a clue. Don't be like me; buy a map. Also, if you sit at a McDonald's for lunch don't be surprised if an older couple sits down at your table with you and talks your ear off about Niagara Falls and New Zealand. They were really nice. I heart NY.

I hope to God that i get a chance to say that someday.

Incidentally, you should try Detroit, where people get in fights for any reason whatsoever, including evening rainshowers.

but for all my pugalistic posturing, i'd be fucking terrified to step foot in Glasgow, home to so many brilliant crazy people as well as, according to this amazing article, the world's greatest concentration of folks who will kick the shit out of you for a larff.

*smooch*

i just read yr alig scene report in the film thread, and i admit i'm impressed...

i thought the limelight was still open... maybe i'm crazy but i remember all these busts and stuff at the tunnel, drug ring gangs etc (not that they all don't have those) and thought it got zapped. i did a searchfor the tunnel and everything i found was dated 1998.

anyway, i'm looking forward to you posting yr alig-days journals...

so, rage -- what have you found in nyc so far?

Rage, I will be visiting my spacious NYC loft this coming Tuesday and Wednesday - will you be free? I would very much like to meet you, I think that of all the Barbelith posters, it is with you I feel the deepest connection.

forget Gotham Comedy Club... The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre is the best comedy in NYC (www.ucbtheatre.com), but I may be biased since I help run the place.

So far I'm loving it here. I've already been to The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre twice. One time I went with Speed Levitch. Funny ass shit. I got an awesome loft in "Hipster Heights" Williamsburg. I've only done a little bit of exploring so far, but I'm loving every minute of it. Rabble rousing on the subways is one of my favorite activities. St. Marks is my current place of entertainment and social experiment conduction. There I enjoyed holding up a sign that said "New to the city and broke. Will have bizarre intellectual conversation for weed. Will also be your new friend." I got high as fuck that night.
