war and hate

Is it just me or does the war that we are now currently engaged in just smack of open racism? i mean, whenever i listen to the media they just speak of "our enemies in the middle east" and what not. what the fuck? it makes me so angry that this attack on america can so easily turn the country's racism into such a horribly powerful force. i've heard jokes that espouse the idea of drowning the entirety of afghanistan in an ocean of water. i've heard people cry out for NUCLEAR attacks against the middle east. hell, my stupid fucking roommate here at college calls calls the afghanistans "brown people" and wishes that he would gt drafted so that he could go over there and kill them. this kind of hatred just turns my god damned stomach.

well, i just had to say that really quick, get it out of my system. thanks for listening!

laters,

-michael

I find it disconcerting that the patriotism has already become a new kind of political correctness, where you can be fired for expressing something other than Unwavering support for the government. Two columnists have been fired in the last month for offering mild criticism of "President" Bush. Even with Bush backtracking on many of his more stupid statments, we're entering an era where dissent is going to be clamped down on. I even read a story where an essay of "System of a Down's" website caused them to have concerts pulled and death threats sent to the band...just because the essay stated that maybe the US's policies might have a little to do with why some people hate the US enough to do something like this.

And we don't have to go into what's happening to Bill Mahr, do we?

Even on my website, I have gotten a LOT of hate-filled e-mails for even daring to say that maybe, just maybe there might be some other solution rather than bombing Afghanistan to oblivion.

Scary times indeed.

Um, you mean saying something off the cuff, breeding an incredible amount of controversy, losing a few sponsers but ultimately doubling your average ratings so that the major media company which broadcasts your show renews your contract for another two years?

Maher is sitting pretty, and his reputation for speaking his mind is only made more credible.

The man has no concrete agenda, so his spoken mind is less than credible or consistent, even if he managed to get something in at the beginning of all this. Last show I saw was terribly supportive, even out of his sacharine lips. Sitting pretty, sure. Being thoughtful... not so much.

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure if I put an upside down flag in my window it'd get smashed.

it just scares me. i mean, i've never seen so much open hatred. I'm considering moving out of the country, i'm so ashamed of the way people are treating each other.

and, please help me out. what did Bill Mahr say on Politically Incorrect? I'm still getting used to the channel numbers out here and thus haven't been able to watch it.

well, i've got family back in Ireland and i'm considering hiding out with them for a while and then maybe going to either London or India. if i do, it won't be for at least another six months. i want to try and give this country a little while longer. i was born here after all.

... and as such have some responsibility to do something about it while y're here, neh?

Bill Mahr said something like 'Say what you want about the terrorists, but they weren't cowards. What's cowardly is dropping bombs from miles up onto or lobbing them from offshore. These people were not cowards." I don't think he went so far as to call B-2 pilots cowards, but hey, he's a chicken.

Though it could be considered cowardly to fly a plane of basically unrelated victims into a building a basically unrelated victims, using stolen identities for an organisation that won't claim responsibility for your actions while believing you are absolved of all responsibility for actions by the 'matry clause' which promises you 70 virgins and endless paradise, in a attempt to attack an sociopolitical ideal that's actually an invisible line drawn in dirt.

Maybe...

And that, of course, would be the best rationale a sponsor might deploy when considering whether to withdraw financial support from Mahr's show. Heck, my grandad used to say suicide was a coward's way out.

Whatever. Regardless of the saliency of that portion of the statement, it's not all that brave to drop bombs.

I understand that i come from this coundtry and as such i have a responsibility to it, but as hard as i try, i am not going to sway the thoughts of thousands. i am not a man as brave as Martin Luther King or Gahndi was, nor am i as skilled in the public arena. Also, i am a middle-class irish american male. it's hard for people to take me seriously when i speak against prejudiced seeing as how i am not one who is often discriminated against. i feel kind of helpless, y'know?

But every little bit helps. It really does. You don't have to "sway thousands"...just get a few folks to shift their perspective slightly.

I think it's the small stuff that ends up making the real difference.
