HELP: Diamond Solicitations

As some of you may know, I work for Kungfu Magazine.

As I understand it we're being "picked up" by Diamond. Checked their web-site & noticed no mention. Our Distributon Rep is away, so it's fallen onto me (as the resident Comics "expert" of the company) to find out what info I can about Soliciting for Diamond & especially appearing in the Previews catalogue.

The company's just now developing an interest in courting comic shops, so mayby those of you in that industry can offer some pointers in what might work.

I've no idea. Hmmm. I'll e-mail my service rep and ask him if he can point me in the right direction. Won't be till tomorrow, but he'll probably have an answer for me.

Zoom.

When Zoom gets you a name and you are assured that you are going to be listed, a few things to remember:

Diamond used to (and still might) send out a big bag of promo stuff every month to retailers. From experience, fliers get thrown away, letters get ignored, but sample issues with a letter inside them get read and ordered because the retailer knows you are serious.

In Previews itself, you'll be lumped in with a ton of "Starlog" type mags, so if you buy an ad, make it stand out by havbing it clear, simple and without a lot of text while still explaining to a comic book fan why he would want to tell his retailer to order it. Will you have kung-fu related comics? Will you have an article on the use of martial arts in comics? Why do you stand out? Why would someone who cares about What Peter Parker Ate Today want to buy your mag? If your ad answers that question in less than 15 seconds worth of reading, it will work.

Previews is a HUGE catalog, with thousands of items listed, without standing out, you won't do well. Maxim and Playboy are HUGE selling mags, but they barely meet Diamond's minimums.

Hope this gives you a few ideas...
