Really moved by the concept behind "Sunday ( The Day Before My Birthday) " <<< Moby's B-Day is September 11 >>> What are your impressions of the album??
Is he played out??

Actually, I'm pretty surprised - his new single "We Are All Made of Stars" is the first Moby song that I've ever liked. Are all of the new songs pop songs with him singing? If so, I might want to check out the rest of the songs.

Moby was all over all of the video channels this weekend, especially MTV2 which had a "Moby weekend" with him introducing videos and things like that. One thing I find interesting is how Moby has packaged him and his music so well without having much of a personality. His music is more often than not background music for other activities - dancing in clubs, advertisements, shopping, eating at cafes, etc, save for his punk record Animal Rights.

Fuck Moby. Fuck him to death. New single is pathetic, insipid million years out of date hippy bullshit that even Jim Morrison would refuse to sing set to the newest selection of NiceMobySounds(tm), selections of gentle, reassuring noises which I hear he plans to market directly to old people's homes in future, such has been the level of his record's success in sending their patrons gently off to sleep.

Not much of a personality? Well obviously .. how's he supposed to complete his quest for world domination if he goes around doing things that might make people not like him? A personality would surely detract from his carefully planned multi-generational consumer appeal..

Down With Moby!

His thugs can beat me, he can lock me up in his jails, BUT HE'LL NEVER MAKE ME PUT ON ONE OF HIS VAMPIRIC LIFE-DRAINING TUNES WHILE I HAVE A CUP OF TEA OF AN AFTERNOON!!

ahem.

Yeah, that's one way of reacting to him. I was thinking yesterday after I posted my earlier reply about how I can't think of anyone more blatantly establishment in pop culture than him...he seems to bend over backwards to meet the needs of consumer culture, very conciously.

That said, I really do like that new single. It sounds like Brian Eno trying to have a #1 hit in 1982.

I think 'When it's cold I'd like to die' was admirably depressing. I loved the sample he used in 'Natural Blues' (never could find out who it was), and liked 'Porcelain', too. I like that he is a Christian without being at all right-wing, and a vegan to boot. 'Animal Rights' (he *started off* as a punk, dontcha know) had a couple of things on it I really liked, including a cover of 'That's when I reach for my revolver'). He's managed to do the whole selling out thing better than anyone, apparently, though... and a lot of his stuff is kinda...boring...

% Goodness! Rizla doesn't like the new Moby album! %

I like 'We Are All Made Of Stars', although it's a little self-consciously Disconnected-Bowie - like 'Heroes' blended with 'Ashes To Ashes'...

Wow, Rizla, look at all that time you saved me by ranting there. Thanks. Now I can do important stuff and keep my feelings for Moby in the background where they, like his music, belong.
