"the new pastoral" in recent pop videos

Hello

last two chemical bros. videos, and especially the Doves video for "there goes the fear" have employed big, big, big skies, galaxies, meadows, seascapes, whales, samba groups, dandelions - that whole Sagan aesthetic.

beautiful, wonderful images. echoing with the peasant-blouses and fjords on display in topshop windows.

what's going on?

Modernmusic is finally waking up to the enormous debt that it owes to synthpop pioneers Men Without Hats.

The music industry has somehow become convinced that the best music in the world is made by unfeasibly relaxed Norwegians with dodgy beards, combat trousers and moogs? And everyone who can even remotely fit into that aesthetic is following suit?

Man, I dunno.. no big deal I suppose .. these things come and go and most of them are so minor they're not even allocated names..

The new Doves video is fucking superb. Everytime I see it, I keep wanting to see it on an Imax screen rather than a puny 21" telly.

I hate the Doves video and the Doves song. Dull, insipid tedo-rock, music for the 35 year old who likes to think they're staying true to their angryrock roots. I want to hit them with their instruments as though they were women. I hope they die when their tourbus crashes into that of Coldplay's who are giving a lift to Travis because they're rent-a-van broke down. Yellow? Fucking grey fuckers!

'tis the season to get ranty...

wow. helpful responses. way to encourage the lurkers to post more, guys.

i always seem to miss any music videos on the telly (when are you people seeing them?), but i have noticed the window displays... and that meadowy arms-aloft romance bit in the star wars trailer....

I'm glad you mentioned Star Wars - the one really surprising element of the Phantom Menace was the battle scene set in a rolling grassy green landscape. Very rare in sci-fi films, no? But quite common on sci-fi book covers and illustrations of the 70s and 80s. Don't know where I'm going with this but there's a vague link between pastoral sci-fi and pastoral electronic music, um, somewhere.

Wow, sorry Kooky...

Saveloy, the periods of time you mention were infested with hippys. Perhaps a reason there? And LoTR is going to have big-sweeping-riding- over-fields-beheading-orcs-and-laughing-maniacally action in parts two and three.

I guess I'm just saying that I'm wondering if you are seeing a link where none exists, purely on the grounds that action takes part in fields which, let's face it, aren't exactly uncommon in this country. Next you'll be trying to link Dune, Lawrence of Arabia and the new Mr. Kipling advert with the bouncy castle full of helium on the grounds they all have sand in them...
