Democracy in the UK? But April Fools was last month...

There is an article here about Lords reform. Its a minor, some say irrelevant, issue about constitutional reform in the UK. Essentially, the government has U-turned and is going to allow discussion (only amongst politicians, mind) of the issue of who gets to be in the second chamber. Its a sign of how demoralised I am that I see this as a minor victory.

I know what you mean, Lurid, but I am very glad they've shelved their piss poor idea of electing just 20%. Representative democracy can certainly be deeply flawed in practice but it sure beats government by hereditary aristocracy or political patronage.

My only concern is that the more elections there are these days, with more tiers of regional & mayoral government in the pipeline, the more power is wielded by those who find something to their taste on the party lists. In principal we should all have more say and it turns out entirely the other way, by and large, like Right Wing Switzerland with its endless bloody referendums.

The elections to the Scottish Parliament threw up an interesting result with their nod to proportional representation, so I'd be happy to see the Lords try something similar. But then I'm a gradualist rather than a revolutionary.
