At The Rock Show Last Night.....

i saw my friend's band sparking toys last night (please check out their lovely website and hear some stuff: www.sparkingtoys.com) at the hope and anchor in islington. they rocked, as they say. while i was propping up the bar with my young friend, a bloke who was a bit out of place - older black bloke in a thirtysomething white audience - squeezed in and eventually got a drink. he apologied for getting in the way and walked off. then he got up on stage and got the headline band to do 'stand by me', which he sung really, really well - turned out he was one of the drifters! - who i used to see on top of the pops as a kid.

it was great!

The only surprise I ever got going to a rockshow like that was a couple of years ago when Big Bad Voodoo Daddy were performing, Johnny Lang joined them on stage unannounced for a couple of songs.

It was very odd, since their music styles had nothing to do with eacvh other, but it worked.

But one of the Drifters? That would be a blast.

Yeah, if it's who I think it is, he was never actually IN the Drifters full-time.

I'm not "on something" (hate that expression on a par w/ "what R U smoking?"). A few years ago this old, black guy moved to my village - which, for most people living there, was enough of a novelty in itself - but then he started performing in the local pub - just getting up there and singing, and, as it turned out, he used to be in the Drifters. Some of us kids started to hang out w/ him during our summer break - smoking a bit of weed, talking about vietnam, watching him getting sexy w/ our girl friends. He'd bought some big-old mansion up near the local forest. It was all veeeery strange. He was strange. We all got quite close in a weird kind of way and then he dropped out of sight. And everyone was left scratching their heads - what the fuck happened to him...? This is the best lead I've had in ages.

God, I think I post too much stupid shit - I'm 100% for real this time.

I wish you could confirm. I'd love to know for sure......

i will talk to my friend in the band that was playing on saturday night. she may have more information. but he was certainly holding up cds of his later onstage.
