In the greater Westchester area of New York, where I'm almost done going to school, there are these super nifty black squirrels. Not just dark gray, but shiny, sleek black. They hang out with the gray squirrels, the only difference- aside from fur color and glossiness- I've noticed is there ears are kinda bigger. They apparently exist on Long Island too.

Are there black squirrels where you live? Does anyone know where they came from? They're just so spiffy...

Hmmmm....I come from the wilds of Devon here in the UK, and we do have many a tale about the mythical black squirrels from across the waters. They do say how as on a moonless night, with a stale wind blowin' from the west, these black monsters come down from the trees, and move about the town in an orgy of blood and destruction. And those big ears? All the better to locate their unsuspecting prey... I'd watch them carefully if I were you. Look straight into those beady little eyes and tell them you know what they're up to...

If we have black squirrels here in the Midwest, I've never seen them. Speaking of squirrels, I have relatives that used to hunt squirrels (and yes, they ate 'em as well). Not only do I not know why they hunted squirrels in the first place, but I also don't know why they only hunted red squirrels. Maybe the gray squirrels were to gamey or something, I don't know. Your guess is as good as mine.

And if you were wondering, squirrel meat is somewhat greasy. It's kind of a poor man's cassoulet.

They're not just soot-blackened grey squirrels?

how on earth would they get soot on them? unless some people use them to clean chimneys with....

Perhaps they're being exploited by modern-day Fagin figures who force them into the chimney-sweeping trade. Or maybe they joy-ride on car exhausts. Or maybe they're Ali G types who've intentionally hung about in industrial pollutant outlets in order to gain some perceived credibility from blackness.

I don't think I have ever seen a black squirrel. It certainly would be fun tho, since I am pretty much sick of the normal colored ones trying to get into my garbage cans.

When I worked downtown, when I woudl eat outside, the squirrels woudl actually come up to my food and try and take it away, cause me to have to thump them on the head to get them to leave. I'd never seen squirrels so bold. Little bastages.

They're not just PR-conscious rats with strap-ons?

strap-on what, 'nesh? strap-on furry tails?

when i was staying at ray fawkes' place in toronto, it was december and snowy, and i would see cats trying to raid the bins of the houses opposite for food. one time i saw this critter that was a little smaller than a cat, all black with a bushy tail. when i realised it wasn't a dinky cat, my first thought was that it was a skunk (never seen a skunk before. wasn't sure if they'd be the type of animal to roam around cities). then ray told me it was a squirrel, though it was bigger than any squirrel i'd seen. and really black.

yeah the black squirrels of Toronto are something to behold - crafty little buggers that they are.
