IQ tests are an excellent way to judge how good someone is at doing IQ tests.

Apart from that I just find them quite funny, in a sort of retro science bullshit way.

ARSE i missed it...
I was working (how sad), but drinking at the same time (YAY).

Apparently, so the beeb website says, you can play online from tomorrow (sunday) for two weeks.

Might just have to give it a go and see how much the world has fried my brain ...

No one will leave me alone long enough to take a damnable IQ test, and the bastards are generally timed.

Indeed. It stikes me that an IQ test is simply a measure of your ability to perform certain tasks at a certain time on a certain day, but there are so many variables involved that the test transcends the realms of diagnonsense and enters into the murky waters of total bollocks.

Not to mention the fact that this one was unfairly weighted for people with certain skills... like 25 seconds to answer some questions with words in them, and 10 seconds to answer some pictoral questions... hello? Surely it'd be fairer if you had a set amount of time to do the whole thing... at least then you could play to your strengths...

yeah i know what you mean, i'd have worked a mathmatical one out in my head, look back at the screen and it flashes to the next question...i did another one this morning (the answer page is down!!!!!!!!!) and i would spend seconds on most, then i could spend a bit longer on the mathmatical ones...All my family is quite smart, but bad maths run in the family :'(

IQ tests completely suck. They're basically unfair- and this is from someone who gets consistently high (not "genius", just above-ave)scores. An IQ test is a really good measure of how white, middle-class and male you are. For anything else, it's not very accurate.

I once spent some time looking at IQ questions, in particular the mathsy and geometric ones (which are really mathsy but not with numbers). Since I think about these sorts of problems a lot, I try to spot patterns in the patterns.

On the whole, you get simple ideas popping up in terms of pattern recognition. Once you get the idea, it is very easy. Its exactly the sort of thing you can train for to improve your score by a substantial margin. So, for instance, I once did about ten or so picture questions. The first question took me five minutes, the rest took about 10 seconds each.

Does that sort of thing compromise the idea of IQ test? I don't know. Given that I'm not sure we have a good definition of intelligence, its hard to assess the question.

I vote that we rename IQ tests General Institutional Aptitude tests. I can't do physics, maths or number sequences and never have been able to-- they make absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. My IQ is apparently 96 but I don't feel this relates to my actual intelligence... I just happen to be shit at some stuff which can be measured and OK at stuff which can't. My housemate got 126 because she's a good all rounder at stuff you learn at school.

Oh, so that's why BBC 1 was taken up by someone asking a bunch of stupid questions last night .. I was wondering what that was about..

Fairly interesting as far as "TV events" go i suppose..

i'm so glad for this thread. i really fucked up the iq test last night and found myself getting upset about it. and my housemate was saying i didn't get a high mark because i think with the right side of my brain and not the left. but i was still feeling pissy. does doing badky on an iq test mean yr stupid? because i felt so stupid last night. and then i was thinking, hang on, i'm doing a fucking degree. it's just not in physics, so my iq is embarrssing.
doesn't dubya have the lowest iq of any american prez? if so, that makes me feel worse. i hate iq tests! that is all.

suds: don't sweat it. Even if IQ tests were a sure-fire, carved-in-stone way of telling how smart someone is, I don't think that a TV "IQ night" is going to give you a reliable result. Nope, not even on BBC.

Yeah, I did it as I grew progressively drunker and discovered I can't do serial number progressions at all.

IQ tests are iniquitous things because some people do believe they measure "Intelligence" and use them to back up crap theories like The Bell Curve. They should be treated with the same degree of seriousness as a pub quiz.

Anne Robinson looks really creepy when she smiles though.

Apparently, according to the test results so far, the brightest man in Britain has an IQ of 149.

You'll excuse me while I piss myself laughing.

I missed the first 10-20 questions, then managed to work most of them out while they were going through the answers and ended up somewhere in the 120s. At time of writing, I'm unable to sort my life out even though it's mostly in my hands, so I guess I'm not as smart as all that.

Friend of mine took a batch of online tests and got results ranging from abou 80 to 140. While doing an astrophysics PhD. Go figure. Better yet, don't bother.

Not only but also...

...the brightest man in Britain had nothing better to do on a Saturday than watch Anne Robinson.

Ooh, a cup of tea would be lovely, thank you.

I am a student in the UK at a good university doing a marketing degree. I had lots of problems due to my epilepsy with learning at primary school I caught up on 5 years education got GCSES and a hnd other good qualifications in the UK. I have whilst at university worked for virgin and Microsoft. I don’t drink smoke or take drugs and have the ability to carry out written, verbal and numerical reasoning yet according to the IQ tests I am not clever well explain that when I can do a degree and work for top companies. Iq tests are unfair inaccurate and based on my studies measure logic not intellect. Intellect is the ability to take information process it and use it well while being opened minded and balancing the evidence. Thank god I don’t live in the USA I would never have been given the chance to show my academic and practical skills. Its worrying that the UK may have these tests soon I hope not they label people anyway why should we care what our Iq is unless it can be directly related to a job. How ironic low Iq yet good job potential degree and I was accepted based on my qualifications and having money into an American college we call it university yet if I had lived in the USA I would probably being working at McDonalds with no future. Iq test measure logic not intellect or ability, which can vary.
