Seeing as we went all OT in the conversation on this, I thought I'd put a thread in here for people to discuss it wihthout feeling bad for not talking about travel.

Box of Delights rocked bells, for me. The title sequence terrified me when I was four, but other than that, I've rewatched it most years (owning the tapes) almost every other year. It's great, the effects aren't as bad as I thought they might be, now having the hindsight of CGI, and it just... works. Of course, I always wanted to see The Midnight Folk, but it would be prohibitive to do on BBC budgets...

But yeah. It's really great to watch on Boxing Day, really. And the BBC won't make stuff like that any more. Ever again. Unless they come up with BBC4-Kids. Which I feel would be a really minority market...

I very much remember Box of Delights. I think I was enthralled but a bit terrified of it when it was first shown on TV (although I could be making that up - it was a long time ago), but I have a feeling it was repeated a few years later and it was completely compulsive viewing in a realistically British tradition that I think we're gradually losing touch with. Stunning...

Wasn't it one of Patrick Troughton's last jobs?
Very weird and of course very white, middle class. The book only makes marginally more sense. IIRC, you don't find out why anyone is doing what they're doing, they just are.
