The Tripods

Once again I come to Barbelith requesting info about DVD's. So is The Tripods worth it? I've looked round the internet and there seemed to be some mixed opinions about the series. For some reason I never watched it as a child (even though a lot of my friends did). So what do you guys think? I'll probably just get it anyway at that price. Unfortunately they're not going to release series 2 on DVD. Something to do with hollywood contracts. See here. I also read that they never made series 3. So without the end of the story is it worth investing 5 hours of my life watching this? No spoilers please!

I watched it as a kid but was to young to understand what was going on.
Be warned though, if you get into it, the cliffhanger ending is going to drive you nuts.

Not really, no. As you say, they never finished it. If they're not releasing the second series that might be slightly better, as the end of the first book makes a better finale than the end of the second. If you're a big fan of Doctor Who (circa the Fifth Doctor) then I'd say go for it, the level of acting, special effects and scripting are about the same as I dimly recall. It may have a certain kitsch appeal by now.

Otherwise, you could probably read the whole trilogy over a warm, wet Sunday by the fire and still save money, time and effort. Now, Tomorrow People on the other hand....

Maybe I'm looking back through the rosy lenses of nostalgia, but I really enjoyed The Tripods when it aired on PBS in the late '80s. I was a teenager then and I suspect that a more adult audience might find it a bit juvenile, but I thought it was quite good compared to other science fiction on TV at the time.

I think it's worth a look at the price in the link you posted, but I wouldn't shell out too much money on it if it wasn't available.

The whole first series and a good chunk of the second can be found on Google Video for those who might be interested?

For some reason I seem to remember the first series was more Lord Of The Rings / Logan's Run stuff where as the second actually explored the alien culture behind the Tripods (But nowhere near as well as the books).
