New dancey/fluffy direction for Bob Mould

Just picked up the new CD ‘Modulate’ from the man who, to those who’re unfamiliar, is the songwriter behind 80s pulverising guitar noise purveyors Husker Du and also Sugar in the early 90s. He’s also been frequently mentioned as an influence by those doing loud/punky but melodic guitar music, including Cobain and Frank Black.
I haven’t read any reviews as yet. Just thought I’d rack up a few of my immediate thoughts.
Would also be interesting to know how others see the man’s work- spotted a few references to him on the board in times gone by (j’accuse Jade, Plums, Ray Fengsforthememory).
He’s definitely earned a place in the pantheon of greats for me, although probably a less accessible listen for most than stuff like Pixies and Nirvana.

But anyway- his new album- in places sounds to me for all the world like …Japan – the same early 80s synth foppsters with the oriental bent. There’s a couple of songs that have classic Sugar guitar hooks (Semper fi and comeonstrong), which power along quite nicely, but with loads of interesting electronic bits in the background.
There’s also his trademark moany/emotive voice throughout.
All in all pretty good, after a couple of listens- I know there’s at least 2 songs that I’m going to listen to about 60 times over the next couple of weeks. And it’s quite a radical direction, considering contemporaries like Paul Westerberg are still peddling the familiar guitar n drums based stuff (which I think is good as well)

I haven't heard this, nor do I have much interest in it, but I can point you in the direction of an thoughtful review by Glenn McDonald that he ran recently in The War Against Silence.

Bob Mould - have to say was not very inpressed by Sugar, the songs sounded like left over Husker Du riffs. And the solo albums felt wrong somehow (I can't explain that any better) Sheets of black rain just sneaks it there for me. If he is doing something different it may well be worth listening to. Ta. Husker Du were fucking marvellous, listening to Candy apple grey only yesterday still get shivers down my spine, I would recommend New day rising to anyone.

bloody hell, will have to go and have a listen to this in a borders or something... maybe he's fallen in love again, that's what produced 'if i can't change your mind' and the whole poppy end of Sugar's stuff...

Ray: Agreed on the Husker Du issue, maty.

Plums: Well, don't know if it's all that upbeat. But maybe not the inchoate howl of despair that we'd gotten used to.

FLux: cheers, that article's really interesting. This album doesn't sit well alongside Mould's boundary-pushing earlier career, it's saying, but he's maybe just taking his time getting comfortable with the new technology. He's got another 2 albums out this year anyway, so time will tell.
While we're on the subject, there does seem to be a bit of a dearth of interesting or exciting electronica-infused rock these days, that doesn't sound cheesy or mass-produced. 'Curve' are the only ones that spring to mind, maybe also early Primal Scream -I'm not a fan of their later stuff.

Now they have been mentioned - Primal Scream are one of the few bands I actually look forward to a release from. Meme if you haven't got Exterminator yet get it. Underneath all that harsh noise is for me the best punk record released in the last ten years. Obviously that staement is open to debate but I'll leave it there. Kill all hippies!

Well, coming from a few completely different angles..

Alec Empire's new album - crushing Germanic techno and crushing Germanic death metal - together at last!

Modest Mouse - mixing traditional indie guitars & whining with beats & turntables, and strangely very good indeed.

Ooh, I'm burning to go and get this. Bob Mould is something of a god for me, never more so than with the first Sugar album Copper Blue. That definitely ranks in my all-time top 10. Thought Beaster a tad extreme for my delicate ears, mind.

Some news I just found:

Former Husker Du frontman Bob Mould has announced that he will reinterpret the 'Du on his forthcoming tour.
Mould is to support the Flaming Lips on his "bizarre solo extravaganza", whilst headlining a London show. His fifth solo album, Modulate, which is heavy on the electronica, will be the basis for the interpretations. "I don't know how people are going to take to the drum 'n' bass version of Husker Du stuff", he noted wisely.

sounds pretty cool to me.
