Do I want a GameCube?

It's small, purple, got a carry-handle, Super Moneky Ball, titchy little ceedees and is stunningly cute, no matter what the marketers would have you belive...

But do I really want it? I'm torn...

It's so cute! And Infantile!

They've got black. Well they do around here anywhere.

It really depends on what games you like to play.

I'd stay away from the X-box though.

naw, console gaming units are for the weak. immerse yourself in a book (porno or other) or something equally non-cubey... ahem. i think video games are a sort of training tool that is being used to prepare the youth of the developed world to multitask and plod away at problems until thay are solved. look at vg evolution: from simple tasks and challenges (pong, mario) to "combo-oriented" games that force you to do as much as possible in as short a time as possible. public "education" only goes so far, but in the consumer market, anyone can be programmed! christ i'm a cynic.

I guess my programming didn't take. If I can't get something to work right, I throw my hands up, scream expletives, then kick whatever I was working on.

Of coure later I end up working through the problem. Heh

Anyway, back on the subject.

If you're wanting a wide variety of video games, go for a playstation 2. If you want a good selection of games within a limited number of genres, go for the gamecube. Don't bother with the x-box. Just upgrade your computer.

And what is wrong with my X-Box? It has Halo, and Halo makes me happy.

Yeah, it 's really cute. I hope your buying it as a piece of furniture, cause there aren't any games for it and you can't watch movies.

FYI, Super Monkey Ball 2 is on the way.

Who cares who many games they make, as long as the games they have are good. Its not like you can afford to buy a whole bunch of them anyway.

PS2 offers the best value for the money. There's not alot of variety on the cube and renting games is far cheaper than buying.

I will probably end up getting a Gamecube this summer just for Resident Evil. An X-box in the fall for Panzer Dragoon and Gunvalkrye.

I'm not that well up on the GC's expected roster, but I hope they don't abandon the "ridiculously cute games that are incredibly fun" concept.

To be honest, you don't really need that much horsepower for that, you just need good game design. The old N64 with expansion pack was quite enough console for Mario Tennis or Zelda.

Super Monkey Ball is probably one of the best video games ever made. And I am already salivating over reports on Super Monkey Ball II.

Other gamecube games you might love for their playable cuteness: Pikmin, where you're a stranded one-inch tall alien who leads an army of adorable flowers to help you recover pieces of your spaceship. And Doshen (which admittedly, you'll have to get from Japan), where you are the big yellow god (and big red devil) of these tiny polynesian islanders. as you change their landscape so that their cities will grow, they will worship you and build monuments to you. oh, and you really have to work hard not to step on them.....

The Gamecube is definitely the best system for the casual gamer who values high quality kaiwai games.

Be forwarned, the games won't start rolling till sometime in 2003.

Ooohh....video game conpiracy theories, I LOVE those.

Reminds me of my brothers accusation that consoles are "population pacification devices". Then he got hooked on GTA3 and couldn't stop raving about it. During a family gathering he went on and on - how addicted he was and for two weeks did nothing but smoke cigaretts while gaming. My uncle had the typical right wing libertarian responce:

"So, someone put a gun to your head and made you play the game?"

Personally, I'm hoping the aliens are training the populace for warfare ala The Last Starfighter.

That's me then.

Plus, the advantage of Nintendo products is that, because they're designed to cope with abuse from hyperactive six-year-olds, they're almost unbreakable. You can cover them in fag-ash, curry and beer, kick them, sit on them and they still keep working.

Which brings up something I've been wondering about for awhile--how easy is it to burn clones of games for console game systems? I've tried to do this with my Dreamcast games and it would work. I assume that it's because the burner couldn't find the right blocks or something. I'm pretty sure that clones are easily done with the PS One games because the games are configured as .exe files. But what about PS2, Game Cube or X-Box? Surely they have some sort of anti-piracy catches and what-not. Right?

Piracy, huh?

Ok, here's the deal with burning stuff for the PSX and PS2.

With the earlier PSX units, the 1001 models, one could just burn a straight up copy of the disc. Now to actually play the game, one would have to put in a legitimate disc, get it to load the PSX screen, and then open the cover with the power on, and switch discs. In the later systems, one needs either a mod chip or a gameshark. Either one will work. I'm going to assume it would be the same for the PS2. I don't have a PS2 to attempt this on, so do it at your own risk.

Gamecube is going to be a bit harder. Take a look at the discs. They're smaller than your normal CD, DVD, and whatnot. Pirates will eventually figure out how to do this, but for now you're stuck buying legitimate copies.

X-box? I don't know. I have no interest in the X-box, so don't really keep up with the happenings.

pirating...hmmm...hitting up the eschelon score report.

For PS1-2 there's a mod chip that you need to solder to play burned games. I heard there's a new chip that goes around this by using clips for the PS2 but you need a boot disc to play a burned copy. For the Dreamcast, you need a boot disc and burned copy or if burned correctly, a boot block in the beginning of the disc. Gamecube games I hear aren't too difficult, it's about getting you hands on the smaller media.

As far as which system....PS2 has lots of good games, then Gamecube for Monkeyball and Resident Evil (followed by the rest of the series), and X-box last for Panzaar. Save some money, wait for price drops and by them all over the next year or two.

It doesn't have monkey balls. It has a monkey! In a ball! That runs! Whereever it fucking wants to! And you control the floor! While it runs! And stop it falling off! FUCKING MONKEY!

THis has to stop...

Can someone tell me what the difference between GameCube Resident Evil and normal?

How many of them are being remade for it?

Trijhaos
21:41 / 09.05.02
Its prettier?

Here, I stole this from a review on Gamefaqs

The pre-rendered backgrounds have been redone in absolutely astounding detail and resolution, things have been rearranged, and the character models probably have about 15-20 times the number of polys.

For the most part this is a graphical remake, but Capcom has thrown in a couple additions, the most notable being some slightly reworked controls (the very useful quick turn from RE3 has been added), and the rearranging of some items and rooms in the mansion.

I don't know how many are being remade.

Resident Evil is a remake. Followed by *straight* ports of 2, Nemisis and Veronica. RE Zero will come out sometime in 2002 (?). RE4 after the ports are finished.

I like RE on the Gamecube but it's buggy and Silent Hill 2 far surpasses in every single way other than combat .

Right i've been asking people about which one to get (xBox/GameCube) all week ...
And this convo, my barbelite freinds, has convinced me to get a Cube ... it has to be done, and i want some monkey too !

Only question that remains to be answered now is...
Do i get a UK one or get a US one when i go to see the misses later this month ??

buy one appropriate for the country you're planning to live in

otherwise, you'll have to buy all your games imported, which is a little expensive and annoying. I don't know whether you'll have to convert the hardware, too.

Yes, buy the one appropriate for your country. You wouldn't buy a TV from the US if you lived in the UK, would you?

No word from Nintendo yet about a price drop or what'll happen in the UK, but here in the US, PS2 (& probably X-Box) are dropping their console prices to $200 apiece.
