Art advice?

I’ve become increasingly interested in art and fashion lately - I've seen some cool stuff, and I want some advice about what to go look at next. I’ve not really paid much attention to art in the past, but I am becoming more and more 'into' it. Umhhh - I like Dave McKean, I like a lot of comic artists, such as Frank Quitely, Joe Quesada, Yoshikita Amano, Mike Allred, Eduardo Risso, Brian Bolland, Rick Leonardi, and I really liked all those paintings that express ‘moods’ in one of the chapters of Scott McCloud’s ‘Understanding Comics’ TP –
The paintings were entitled things like ‘anger’ and ‘happiness’ and were basically just shapes on shapes. But they were brilliant. Simple and brilliant. I’d be grateful if anyone could post the geezer’s name and/or possibly some of his art. Oh, and the only Van Gogh painting I actually like is this one, called ‘Skeleton with a cigarette’.

My advise is "put down the fucking comics." Its like saying that your favorite writers are Frank Miller and Grant Morrison. Oh, I forgot, those are your favorites, right Andrew?

I'd say visit some local museums and find out for yourself...also google a bit and check out some online galleries. I'll post some as I find them...oh and Bio, no need to follow Andrew around just to insult him...no flack here that I see...But do try to branch out from comics, it's a small contingent of much, much more.

Whatever.

If you want to learn more about art and fashion you should try checking out some artists and fashion designers on the net or in the bookstore. They have whole sections devoted to them, just like the X-Men do at your comic shop.

Bio K9 - He's either a troll (the troll) in which case you're baiting him - or he's not, in which case ouch! Mumra - I suppose it depends what kind of thing you're interested in.

It's really difficult to direct people towards art that might initially connect with them. People go for all kinds of different stuff, from Dutch portrait painting through to sexually fused prepubescent children wearing trainers.

I suppose my favourite bits of art are mostly post-impressionist and mostly-non-representational. Stuff like Malevich:

I'm also very keen on some Paul Klee, Andy Warhol and Picasso - basically all the people who did imaginative abstract work or more conceptual art...

On the other hand I also really like the kind of Vienna Secession / Art Nouveau stuff and that looks so much like comic art sometimes it's untrue...

My apologies Tom.

Theres a Fashion thread dying a slow death in the Art/Fashion/Design forum. Some people have posted their favorite designers and some links (though not nearly as many as I had hoped) if anyone is seriously interested. As far as comic related artwork, try Egon Schiele. Remember AEON Flux? It has his DNA all over it.

Love that Koloman Moser, btw.
