Ok. So let's just say for the sake of argument that you'd deleted a large swathe of user names who had never posted. And that this had taken you down to 900 members on a large and well-trafficked message board. And lets just say that (while you were waiting for an approach to the board membership to be worked through fully and for your programmer to have time to implement the next round of changes) membership was still by invitation only.

Who would you ask to join the board? Anyone in the world. And remember, you can play if you want to, but we've already persuaded one quite prominent thinker to come and talk on the board at some point in the nearish future, so if they're vaguely plausible then we might actually see if they wanted to join...

And provide us all with a link to something on the net about the person in question. So you can get a better sense of what they're about...

From a Switchboard point of view, I'd say Mark Thomas:

Mark Thomas

articulate, passionate, good at debate and pretty damn funny to boot.

Richard Milton, the fellow I pumped up with the "alternative science" thread in the Lab.

David Byrne. Brian Eno. The thinking man's rock stars. (think big)
Stephin Merritt/ Claudia Gonson (mentioned in the music recently)

Mac McCaughan, Superchunk singer & Merge Records founder.

Michael Nesmith. MTV godfather, electronics corp CEO, movie producer & former Monkee.

Billy Bragg.

Ralph Nader.

Michael Moore.

Shephard Fairey, the "Andre the Giant has a Posse" creator.

Roy Walford, the Biosphere II leader and life extension scientist (CRON diet - Calorie Reduced Optimum Nutrition).

Kary Mullis, the biochemist who won a Nobel for inventing DNA sequencing, wrote a great book about his adventures with LSD, nitrous, surfing, and as a witness at the OJ Simpson trial. Oh, and he also helped identify HIV, but doesn't think it's the sole cause of AIDS.

Joe Sacco. I wrote him up in Comics, but he'd be just as at home in Switchboard or Creation. He has invented comics journalism, written about his travels in Palestine & Bosnia.

Daniel Clowes. Peter Bagge. Chester Brown.
Los Bros. Hernandez (love & rockets. any of the three would be cool.)
Jeff Smith (Bone). Bob Burden (Flaming Carrot, a really swell guy). Peter Milligan. Mike Allred. Ann Nocenti.
If you want to watch the fights, David Sim. Kevin "Chasing Amy" Smith.

I bet PATricky could recommend some great martial artists....

Phil Hine. Peter Carrol. Nigel Pennick.
Donald Michael Kraig.
Richard Bandler.
All of them have written some pretty good stuff about different strains of magick or reality reformation.

Cat Yronwode. Former editor of Eclipse Comix, writer, and expert in hoodoo/African-American folk magicks.

Dan Simmons. Writes excellent speculative fiction. And by writes, I mean, he's a really good writer.

Gene Wolfe. Ditto. Literary science fiction. Who'da thunk it?

Richard Kelly, the guy who directed Donnie Darko.

Richard Linklater, the guy who directed "Tape" and "Slacker" - meaning, he's trying to launch his *second* revolutionary film movement, with digital media. (sort of an extension of the first DIY stuff.) Also founded the now-immensely important SXSW art, film, music festival.

Robert Pinsky, America's poet laureate.

Inga Muscio, author of "Cunt".

Yes I'm on a feminist tip this morning.

Drucilla Cornell (sorry I can't do links - if any moderator wants to fix this they can, or I can go and find out how to do them and moderate it myself) - feminist legal theorist, union organizer. Her email might be: DCornell@Kinoy.Rutgers.edu but this might be an old one. If you decide to invite her I have an up-to-date email for her at work.

http://www.cddc.vt.edu/feminism/Cornell.html

Avital Ronell - deconstructionist feminist, writing a book on stupidity, really good haircut. Interview here:

and quote from article on the invention of stupidity here:

Also: Michael Hardt & Antonio Negri, who wrote Empire. I have an email address for MH at work (though he's said he doesn't have time to be e-interviewed so he might be too busy to contribute much here) but Negri is impossible to track down - we wrote to the prison he's supposed to be in and they returned the letter "unknown".

George Monbiot? Tariq Ali?

I think it might be as good idea to invite people who don't agree with the pervailing political bent of the board. Someone who would be willing to discuss things without getting bent out of shape and taking it to a personal attack level, but just disagreed with our core beliefs.

Anyone know anyone on the net who's a bit right of center but doesn't mind mixing it up a bit?

Camille Paglia - pleeeze.....just so I can ask if I can put my penis in her ear. I'm that in love with her.

The author of Cat and Girl comics. She'd fit right in.

Ron Rosenbaum, writer for the New York Obsever. Obsessed with Skull and Bones, Don Delillo, codes in Shakespeare, and wrote a book on Hitler. His book, The Secret Parts of Fortune is excellent as well.

Comic book folk all tend to stay near their own message boards, I have found. I mean, Warren Ellis goes on and on about how he's too sick to write, but by God he can post on his message board a kerjillion tims a day...and if Bendis posts any more he'll never leave the house.

Gene Colan would be a GREAT guest, but I don't think many of the people in the comics forum would know his work. I love the folks in the comics forum, but every time I start talking Silver and Bronze Age comics, I just just feel people's eyes glaze over as they stare at the screen.

Chuck Austin would be a fun guest...even though opinion is split about his work (I like it, myself).

Ryuji Miyamoto - Photographer

Naomi Klien - if for no other reason than to give opinion on the rise of No Logo Sluts.

The director of Pi and Requiem for a Dream - urk brain freeze on the name thing, too lazy to search. Would like to discuss his interpretations for the new Batman and his feelings on Tim Burton's contribution.

Jack Fear
16:07 / 06.05.02
Darren Aronofsky, that would be.

pointless and uncalled for
16:14 / 06.05.02
That's the fellow. Got to reckong he would pretty interesting to discuss things with.

Tim Burton wouldn't be too bad either.

I wouldn't mind getting some invitations out to some media representative on a play nice basis. Editor in Chief of such publications as the Gaurdian/Observer, Chief Programmer for the BBC etc. Understandably they would be unlikely to accept an invitation, however we could compile a list of respected mainstream journalists for a discussion session or even to write for the bomb. It would be nice to see what they would be willing to say on a less fettered platform.

Solitaire saith: Anyone know anyone on the net who's a bit right of center but doesn't mind mixing it up a bit?

James Lileks. For so many reasons. Pop-culture savvy, funny as hell, fierce, compassionate, and not afraid of a dust-up. Conservative more or less by default: he's appalled by sloppy thinking more than anything else.

Ethan Hawke
16:35 / 06.05.02
I actually enjoy reading Lileks every now and again. He's also got the great pop-cult aspects to his web site (the Americana diners, old clothing styles, etc.) that appeal to my kooky side. I have to admit I like it when he takes down Guardian editorial writers a notch or two.

pointless and uncalled for
17:06 / 06.05.02
I would like to suggest that if we cannot get interactive participation on the board for people that are accessible and we are genuinely interested in we should try and get an interview.

I think that there is enough interpersonal journalistic talent here to get some really insightful articles.

Our survey said: jeez, I don't think we need him, we've got enough slavish imitators...
