"...Mr Parr, who is considered one of Australia's leading artists, is taking Panadol for the pain.
"His friend David Bromfield said: "The performance is a criticism of the vacuous, hopelessly dictatorial nature of some contemporary art.
"He added: "It's about the possibility of confloating the body, the living body, to a gallery wall. A gallery wall, dead abstract art, a white wall. The living body, living flesh. A hammer and a nail. It's the shortest cut between the problem with the art and how you can make the art alive."
"Last year Mr Parr locked himself in a small room with no food for a week.
"Artspace board member Brian Mahoney said: "This is the research and development end of the arts in Australia.""
Mr Parr has had himself nailed to a gallery wall (with a silver nail) and is currently on a webcam at the gallery's site above.
At the moment he seems to be standing up, though you'll be relieved to hear he does have a chair, he's not actually hanging from the nail.
Does being live on the net actually change the status of what he's doing in any way? Make it more or less valuable artistically? Or does it just make it easier to access for people who are not very near Woolloomooloo?
or is he just another attention-seeking camboi? |
