John Romita, Jr.

I highly recommend checking out the interview with John Romita, Jr. in Newsarama today. It's really nice to hear what he has to say, he comes off as a real gentleman and a total pro, although I'd already figured as much from him. The one thing that really made me go "what?" was his admiration for the Kubert Bros., which baffles me to no end. I can't see what a master of the form like JRJR might see in those two, I think the Kuberts are both erratic and verge on being total hacks. Hmmm. I'll have to look through those Ultimate X-Men's again.

I think I'm going to go to Times Square and buy one of those sketches he's doing to raise money for his neice - it's a really nice thing for him to do, and I'd love to have a piece of original art by him.

I read it earlier and thought exactly the same things.

Except the bit about going to Times Square, I mean, I would - it's a cool thing he's doing - but it would involve buying a plane ticket and all sorts...

I really wish I hadn't started that sentence.

Is this the guy that drew Ann Nocenti's Daredevil??? Agree that it's strange that he would admire the Ultimate X-men annoying art.

I read that interview earlier today and thought about linking it here. He really does come off like a class act throughout the piece.

His recent work on Amazing Spiderman and Hulk has been great. I have been a fan of his work for a number of years (probably since his X-Men work... the interview includes an image of one of his covers from those days, the one with Cyclops splitting the logo).

I would love to get an original sketch from him, but a trip to NY is a little out of my range right now.

Article in salon about both Romita's and the new flick here.

And Flux, do you know where/when in Central Park Romita is going to be? If it was in the article I missed it...

I think his stuff's real cool, but I also think the big bad in spidey looks like an utter cock (the. eighties. are. over.).

From Popcultureshock's JRJR page:

In December, John's niece Jordan Atherton (who is 2 1/2 yrs old) had a golf-ball size tumor removed from her brain. She was diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy for the remaining tumors in her spine. John Romita’s family has set up a trust for any expenses not covered by the Atherton's HMO and JR JR himself will be doing several fundraising events.
Here's the info on the first marathon benefit sketch event (John's going for a Guinness record!):

JR JR will be appearing at Planet Hollywood in Times Square, NYC May 10th from 11 am to 7 pm. Then he will head on over to the Bar Code Galactic Circus for the next 16 hours then it's back to Planet Hollywood from 11 am to 7 pm. He hopes to repeat this routine until he gets exhausted...

Yes, people always talk about the Frank Miller run on Daredevil but the Ann Nocenti/John Romita Jr. Daredevil comics rank up there as some of my all time faves. Many of the Daredevil covers he did were flat out masterpieces. All the Typhoid Mary stuff was great.

Romita Jr is one of Marvel's unsung heroes in a lot of ways. He has worked on a number of great comics, and each time he does, he brings the storytelling skill of his father, and the energy of Jack Kirby into his work. He is one of the few artists who can actually draw a decent fight scene as well as a scene of two people talking in an apartment.

While the writer is getting all the praise on Amazing Spider-Man, if it were by any artist other than Romita, the emotional impact would be lessened and maybe even deadened. It's always amazing to be that he can draw the Hulk destroying something and make you feel it, and then in another comic have Mary Jane hesitate to pick up a phone and have a different but equal emotional inpact.
