The world tree. Motion along the vertical axis. Access to heaven and hel. The inner strength to change the self. Backbone. But change, we know from tarot, is just a nice way to re-label Death.

The Yew tree grows in cemetaries, and is sometimes said to contain the spirits of the dead below its roots. Its wood is made into bows, giving strength to hunt and being death to others. Its bark emits a hallucenigenic gas, a shaman tied to it may venture to the underworld. This rune is death, and every aspect drawn from death.

Consider the bow. In your enemies hands, it is death to you. In yours, the threat of death brings power of banishing and warding. The secret of this rune is in access to the powers of death, and communication through them. It is great strength to those who wield it, a bane to those it happens upon.

This rune came to me in a dream once, as I meditated upon it to learn its ways. I was in a city, bombs fell from the sky. A nuculear nightmare. I stood at the corner of a building, the corner of a crossroads of city blocks. Fire exploded to one side, and then to the other, and I knew I could not escape. Then before me, this rune hung black in the air, filling my vision and reality. It spanned below the blasted earth, and the above the clouds. I felt no fear. I passed through it, and woke.

Upon ingestion I see myself twirling a staff, creating a spinning shield.

A shield or protection that gives one breathing space, inwhich to come up with a strategy of progression.

I see a combination of Jera and Isa, together they genrate the protection and the spinning dynamic.

In my dreams I can delay teh attack of a monster, using my dream skill of sharp shooting, hunting with a long range projectile weapon. It cannot destroy the monster, only keep it at bay whilst another technique is developed. I feel calm though, capable of keeping a mortal enemy away from causing me harm.

I go to a party and find myself too avasive, I cannot engage with people and come across distant, impersonal and aloof. Barriers are on automatic, spinning away any attention.

Purpose is a word that crops up in my mind with this room, the application of mind and body, threaded with the intent of the soul.

I'm asked to paint a picture for a poster, I am stimulated by an old runic futhark poster I rediscover from 1990. The poster is keen to point towards Yggdrasil, the world tree and the nine realms within this construct:

"Yggdrasil is the world tree, the tree of worlds; reaching beyond time and space it's boughs shimmer and vibrate with the power of the runes. they are its life-blood, it's essence, and its secret. To understand its ways, is to travel the paths of the runes and to meet oneself beyond the void."

Eihwaz is the rune of Yggdrasil and the above quote relates to its esoteric properties.

The power of my DNA can protect me and create a hull within which I can travel the hidden realms.

Anglo-Saxon rune poem:
Yew is on the outside
a rough tree
and hard, firm in the earth,
keeper of the fire,
supported by roots,
[it is a]joy on the estate.

Old Norse rune poem:
Yew is the greenest wood in winter;
there is usually, when it burns, singing.

Old Islandic rune poem:
bow, rainbow - "descendent of Yngvi"
Yew is a strong bow,
and brittle iron,
and Farbauti [a giant] of the arrow.

Interstingly I forgot all about this rune and used it as "Splicer" Astral Weapon like a Mad Max Boomerang. I got into the Runes really young and then gave it up. Took it back again though easier than the I GIng (smelly feet) and the Tarot. I'm not too clued into alot of the Runes as I should get - saw someone with an peace sign on their handbag made me froth - divined it as a portal to a life in the after life getting fucked by a huge horse. Ah the sweetness of obsesions!!! Boss Hog exclaiming "Yew Better Believe It Boyyy!!!!" with a Flavour Flav kitchen clock hanging around his sacrifcial neck!!

Was Crowley up on his rune lore?

My instinct tells me that someone as insatiably curious and well-read as Crowley would almost certainly have covered a bit of rune-lore, but I can't find anything online to indicate that he did.
