Am I insane? I was celebrating getting "disability" for being what they'd call Manic Depressive, and I decided to pick up a shitload of new music. Of course I know that they're the crazy ones and all that, but if they want to call me crazy and disabled and send me a monthly check for $1100- who am I to compalin?

Thing is, I need to know if I'm insane. I spent most of my first monthly check on a Whole Fucking Bunch of music. There was so much music I needed to get and I was feeling so behind because I was late to music itself, and I just needed to do this.

Ok, so "insane" isn't the word. I'm thinking more "awesome." Still, am I the only one who's ever done something of this sort?

Holy fuck, I only now realized how ironic this was. #1 trait of manic behavior- impulsive spending!

When I was 18, a policy my parents had been scrimping and saving to help me when I left home for University matured. The handsome final sum was £60 which must have seemed a huge amount when they were planning this in the fifties, all those years before.

They gave me the money and said it was up to me to save it or invest it or do whatever I had to with it. I went straight out and bought £60 worth of vinyl. Got me a lot of it too since the average cost of an album then was around £2.50. I should really be so ashamed but I had a great record collection when I was a student.

Boy, did I get thin though with no money for food for ages. That might have been because I blew half my first grant cheque on a leather jacket.

Take care, Rage. Make sure you listen to all of those cd's though! And no Nick Cave or Leonard Cohen, promise...

Forgive me if I'm being insensitive or anything, but - christ! - who needs prozac when you can get 12 grand a year for being depressed...

Blimey, I would love to blow that kind of money on music.

So, you want to know if you're insane? Well, what CD's did you buy?

I think that's the important thing here.

I shall make the list later.

It's probably all shit you guys have already heard a million times though.

I'm sure that the recording industry thanks you for spending the money on those 40 records rather than downloading them - right now, I'm in the middle of doing one of my best friends the favor of burning 50+ cds for her. Hilary Rosen would wring our necks if she could...

Rage
23:07 / 01.05.02
Or a friend who was willing to burn 50+ CD's for me.

And just because I've been a bad little corporate drone slave to the music industry doesn't mean that I didn't purchase some good shit! Heh.

23:30 / 01.05.02
You shouldn't feel bad about buying records, so long as you paid a reasonable price for them. Musicians and record companies (even huge corporate ones) making money certainly isn't a bad thing. Those people need to pay bills and taxes just like everyone else...

I would probably SHIT 40 CD's if someone plopped $1,100 expendable dollars in front of me. And then I'd probably go out and, you know, buy 40 more with the $1,100. But then, I have 1,000+ albums already, so I'm not exactly a paragon of self-control.

a monthly check for $1100

fucking hell!!, i wish i was a manic depressive .. how easy is it to fake it?

Couple of suicide attempts and I'll be made for life..

(actually, um, that was a little insensitive i guess, sorry..)

And if I had that money, i'd probably sepnd it all on music too.

I mean, I impulse bought about £65 worth of records just this weekend.. herion's got nothing on music..

Mmmmmm. I just applied for incapacity benefit and all that, somehow I have a feeling I won't be getting £1000 a month... but I did stand in line for two hours just to get the forms! I was actually in hell.

Anyway, sorry. This is in music after all... hit us with that list Rage!

Fuck. Shit. Yeah!

$1100 a month! Fuck! Shit!

Wow! That's, like, $244 a week! Fuck!

That's, like, about £150 a week! Twart! Cock! Balls! Fuck! Yeah!

Which, you know, after rent and bills, could leave me with *up to* £30 to spend on food a week. Fuck! Arsebagels! Spunk! Yeah!

And, you know, if I live on bread, lentils and tapwater, that could leave me with a good £25 just for me, me, me. Yarooo! Shit! Lay off, Bunter! Sand in my urethra!

Well worth the irritability, manic episodes, suicidal episodes, impaired judgement, low self-esteem, disengagement from social activities, inability to concentrate, sleeping problems and all that PUSSY SHIT.

DAMN, I wish I was manic depressive!

Ah, Barbelith, how I love you.

It is perhaps better than attempting to live on absolutely nothing at all. And still being pretty much completely mental.

Oh, absolutely. Not my point. My point was that the support available for people unable to work through manic depression through the state is pathetic, and to say "I wish I was manic depressive", as if suffering from disabling psychological problems was some kind of wizard wheeze and well worth it for the government handout was patronising and insulting.

for $800 you could have gotten a pretty good computer. Maybe even one with a CD burner.

But the collection... is probably sweet.

Find good used CD store with generous exchange policy, and you need never buy an album again.

I probably fit the profile for some bipolar disposition or chemical imbalance or another and could probably get assistance for it if I wanted to milk the system (which I would be doing, seeing as how I still manage to function in spite of constantly having to deal w/some of that aforementioned "pussy shit"). Not that there's anything wrong w/milking the system, mind you. Still...$1,100 is more than I make in a month. A lot more. And I would probably spend a lot of that extra cash on music. Rage doesn't seem that insulted by the assertion that others, in her position, might blow enormous scads of money on creature comforts. If anything, it probably says that a lot of us are closer to getting that assistance than we realize...

Sometimes Haus irritates me; sometimes, as on threads like this one, I thank each and every God for his mere existence.

And my credit card's at its limit?!! Am I manic-depressive?!!!

No, I am not. Chances are, people, neither are you.

unfortunately, rizla, all i remember from my two suicide attempts was shitloads of misery for me and my loved ones. i don't think money came into it.

for $800 you could have gotten a pretty good computer. Maybe even one with a CD burner.

The library here lets you check out 10 CDs at a time. Box sets count as 1 selection. The last 10 I checked out were:

1. Liliput - liliput/kleenex
2. Broadcast - the noise made by people
3. Shins - Oh, Inverted World
4. The Aluminum Group - Pedals (because it was produced by Jim O'Rourke)
5. Black Heart Procession - 3
6. Joy Division - Heart and Soul (box set)
7. Flipper - Generic
8. Roots and Blues Retrospective 1925-1950
9. The Fall - 458489 B sides
10. Beachwood Sparks - Once We Were Trees

All in all, some nice stuff.
