A ridiculously great live band, and they give splendid interview too. If I was fifteen they'd be my gods. I'm not sure if the recorded stuff quite lives up to the attitude and the ideas just yet, but there's still plenty to get excited about.

The only one I've managed to get is REMEMBER ME; truly great neo-Joy Division.

they are good live. plus, they have props - fake greenery and stuffed birds and stuff. even though i don't rate them quite as highly as you guys, i have to say i completely freaked the nite we saw them - full-on front row non-stop dancing. so hard, in fact, that about halfway thru the show i took a break - sitting exhausted on their frontstage amp and watching the crowd from the lip of the stage. the guitarist gave me a really perplexed look when he stepped past me to do the geetar hero thing closer to the crowd.

they run their own club nite here in brighton. if anyone's interested in attending the next one...

"Even British Sea Power don't know whether they're an art project or a proper band, but who cares when they make sounds as glorious and uninhibited as this. It's as if Damien Hurst had finally made a record."
bbc review

It's out. And it's great. Go get it.
Includes completely new and better versions of single songs Remember me, Fear of drowning, The lonely, Lately, and Wooden horse.

I saw this in HMV the other day. I liked their support slot for the Flaming Lips, so I might do this record on a listening post.

Having seen British Sea Power play an unprecedented four times in the past 18 months (that's three times supporting people - I haven't been following them around or anything), I think British Sea Power are, well, really great.

They've got a fine line in Bowie-esque twisted rock and great, big, swooning romantic songs.. far more like Echo and the Bunnymen than Joy Division in my opinion (it seems that comparison keeps cropping up mostly cos the singer looks like Ian Curtis), but either way sufficiently fierce and unpredictable to make them a lot more than just a retro new wave band..

I think the BBC review quoted above gives completely the wrong impression incidentally - their live shows are pleasantly chaotic, but their recorded material is way slick and their songs are almost painstakingly well constructed (in a traditional epic pop song manner) - they can't really be described as a crazy art band..

I love the way they deliberately surround themselves with reference points that are completely outside the usual sphere of pop - I don't know if anyone's read the 'influences' on their website / press releases, but it's a fantastic list of silent filmmakers, aviation pioneers, war heroes, scientists etc.. I think their WWII/Dad's Army stylings are more than superficial - their songs make me think of looking out across the Atlantic from a battleship or travelling across the Urals in a zepplin or something like that.. which is a refreshingly unusual point of view to gain from a rock band..

sorry about the arch-pretentiousness of above post.

ok i saw them again last night at the forum and I thought I'd bump this thread- what's the barbs thoughts on the new album 'open season'?

I like the new album although it hasn't grabbed me in the way that the first one did- but its growing on me (give it a another week).

Obviously they were great live- capes, scarfs and loud romantic english rock. To me the earlier material sounded a little stronger- but again thats maybe cos i've known it and loved it for 2 years.

They had a wicker Stag as the main stage prop (which ending being thrown into the crowd and pulled apart by a crowd baying for blood in a glorious wicker-manesque moment!)

support from Brakes & Duke Spirit- wasn't really bothered with Duke Spirit but Brakes were great- like a mini BSP meets Pixies with very very short songs (the keyboard/ percussion player of BSP sings & plays guitar)
