Define Camp.

How exactly would one define camp? I mean, I'm sure most of us know what's camp when we see it or when we hear something like About Henry - that character has always been very camp, ever since the very beginning. - (Flux) But how would you explain it to someone who has no idea what you're talking about?

Give them a Tim Curry movie and tell them to work it out for themselves.

It's closely related to irony, except not as easy to define. Something that's fun for being a parody of itself, in a way. Taking its most noticeable qualities and exaggerating them to the breaking point.

I think the details of "camp" are probably one of those "learn by watching" things.

I mean, it's easy to point to Mr Humphries in Are You Being Served? But how would you move from that to explaining why Switchblade Sisters is camp? Or Commando?

I like Susan Sontag's definition of camp as "failed seriousness." But by this definition, self-conscious camp is not camp (or it's failed camp.)

Excellent Hermenaut article on camp.

John Waters: You know? Camp? The tragically ludicrous? The ludicrously tragic?

Homer Simpson: You mean, like when a clown dies?

-'homer's phobia', the best simpsons episode ever
