Compulsory ID cards?

Mr Blunket in the UK is talking about the very quick intro of compulsory ID cards in the UK.
It might be presented as for our safety and wise right now, but....

What when the government and banks all decide that all monetry transactions will now be processed through the compulsory cards, leading to the eventual phasing out of cash money.

No more black market, no more illegal stuff like drugs.

A nice, safe utopian society completely controlled. Worst thing? They'll argue that it's not illegal, 'cause technically it's not.

Remember:

Anti-hooligan laws passed last year to prevent soccer hooligans travelling abroad, for 'safety reasons' are now used to stop protesters travelling abroad to the G8 summits.

I can now guarentee that if this legislation comes to pass I will at some point go to prison, because I cannot see a way where I would be willing to carry the thing around.

I think they're going to find it quite hard to pass the swingeing legislation that's been discussed in the European Parliament over the last couple of weeks, becasue it contravenes the human rights legislation that's already in place. But, but... ID cards are used in many European countries, several of which have been and are much more liberal than Britain, so it's not necessarily a problem, provided the democratic process works (which, in the UK, is debatable).

Well, if they're going to be any good at all, they'd have to be.

We seem to have about nine or ten threads about ID Cards. Might I suggest continuing this discussion here?
