This is disappointing - Poison touring for Open Up and Say Ahh, with opening band Warrant. Please kill me.

The next two were AC/DC and, finally, Fugazi.

Ok, I'll come clean. First show was White Snake w/ Faster Pussycat opening. Back when Steve Vai was in White Snake. Must have been '89/'90, I was 14. About 6 months later I caught AC/DC. About a month after that I discovered punk, and left metal behind.

Why is everyone so damned ashamed that they went to see hair metal bands as their first shows? I would have killed to see Poison in their heyday (I saw them last year and they fucking rocked, can only imagine how cool it would have been to see them circa 88-89). Midnite Oil isn't anything to be ashamed of either, they fucking rule. Man, all you need to recognize yer white sneakers wearing past and embrace it.

Come on Rothko Bobby Brown, play fair. I admitted to seeing New Kids on the Block - I could at least have picked the Rheostatics as my first gig. But then I'd be a lying bastard. I'm going to remember this information for some convenient time later.

I was taken by my parents to see Willie Nelson when I was about 14 or so...the man is a warhorse when it comes to concerts, and still one hell of a guitarist. I remember at the time being upset that he didn't do the entire "Red Headed Stranger" album.

The first concert I went to on my own was Blondie with Duran Duran opening. And I loved it. Still do.

Well, if we're getting personal, my first concert was a Gilbert and Sullivan recital at the Orange town hall. Nyah, wembley, nyah. Culture with a K!

I may very well have seen Raffi and Sharon, Lois and Bram as a child. In fact, I'm sure I saw Raffi. Hang on, is he exported anywhere other than Canada?

Heh.

Well *I* saw The Replacements get in a fight and break up live, onstage, at their last concert EVER!

My only real moment of Rock N' Roll History, I suppose.

Bah, you hip nippers. I was a late bloomer when it came to gigs, didn't attend my first one till 1987 (18/19 yrs old!). It was The Damned at Portsmouth Guildhall, and I went with my mate Jim. The band did their thing brilliantly, playing a good chunk of their early stuff, but being gig virgins me and Jim had bought frigging sit-down tickets in the upstairs balcony with all the pensioners. The frustration at being unable to express our admiration with anything more physical than tapping our toes and clapping like GODDAMN OLD LADIES at a glee club applauding the Bognor Regis Chamber Ensemble cannot be measured with existing technology, not even an atomic military frustrometer.

My first show was one by this band called Sled Napkin who were local and played a weird form of Mr. Bungle worship with organ and thrash influence in the early early 90s. It was fun.

Mine was Whitesnake at the height of their hair metal popularity, with opening band Great White. Crappy seats, too, up and behind the stage. It was close, but the band was facing the other way! Shameful, I know.

The next I went to was the Monsters of Rock tour, one of the first big festival tours. The lineup was Kingdom Come, Metallica, Dokken, The Scorpions, and Van Halen. I was about 14, and it ROCKED!!! Though I'll admidt I took a nap during Dokken. It was a long day. The Scorps stole the show though, even though Van Halen were the headliners.

I must have been really high in the year 1984. I only saw two gigs that year, but for the life of me I can't remember which one came first...It's all a haze...

I know I saw Metallica at L'Amours (Rock Capital of Brooklyn!!!) that year, 'cos I've got the sweatshirt at home to prove it. (Or was it '83? Fuck – now I've gotta go home & check!) It was a blinder – I was about 13, totally underage, and completely overwhelmed. Great show.

For my sins, I also saw the Firm that year at some arena (either Nassau Coliseum or the Meadowlands) and I remember hanging out with the other headbangers getting wasted in the parking lot more than I remember Jimmy Page.

Here goes. Korn, back when Staind opened for them, back when Issues hadn't come out yet. It was actually a great show. I was 16, I think. I was late with music in general.

Had a girlfriend whose dad had a car, so was able to get in and out of Edinburgh for Bowie's Ziggy Stardust Tour (must have been 1972, maybe '73 - I was a very sweet sixteen). Transcendent and life-changing. It was in the old Empire, where the Festival Theatre is now.

grant:85... that'd be right after "When You Least Expect It..." came out, right?

yes it was although i didn't know it at the time. i had no clue who AO was or what they played...i just lucked into going as my bestfriend lived near the theater. i went to see them again two years ago here in pgh, for nostalgia's sake, and they sounded exactly the same. i got a nice fuzzy feeling knowing that some things really are a good as you remember, y'know? =)

Damn.

I got a live album about three or four years ago, and it was Mike Palmer with three (!) guys who I'd never heard of before.

On the other hand, they did a wicked cover of Dead Kennedys' "Police Truck."

I heard something about the other guys touring with Mike, but all rumor and hearsay.

<<

Oh, and on the Replacements tip, I didn't see their last show ever, but I did see their first arena show, opening for a Tom Petty tour in Miami (tours tend to start or end in Florida). Westerberg said, "Gee, I haven't been to a concert this big since I was 16 and stupid."
Then he apologized.
