four missing planes

not sure whether this has been mentioned elsewhere or not ...

on the day of the incident the early reports mentioned 3 planes having impacted with buildings, a fourth plane had come down and another four planes were reported "missing".

were these "missing" planes ever found? i don't recall hearing anything after that initial report.

how exactly does one "lose" a plane?

The four planes were eventually accounted for and turned up fine.

How one loses a plane? Damned if I know.

I had the impression that the various agencies involved were all reporting their planes in dribs and drabs. So you'd get a report that United were missing a plane, then another, then AA were missing two, then the CAA would say they couldn't find four...same planes, different folks.
