or, Who You Read. or, Another Fucking Thread about Personal Blogs.

...except this one's different! 'cause i'm not asking people about their own blogs - but about which other barbe-blogs they visit on a regular or semi-regular basis.

i'll start:

first up - and criminally unmentioned in the blog whore thread across the way - is ellis' born of frustration - which has zero tolerance for self-censorship, and as a result is often completely, compulsively essential. on a similar tip, glint's batman doesn't love me any more is like an angst injection in a major artery. and rage's paradox to the prime manages - uniquely, i think - to contain more questions than straight statements - like the electric kool-aid acid test in a head-on collision with the wonder years.

kooky's kookymojo is a wondrous web portal to anywhere that's any good, and suds' diary is old skool cool.

i'd also like to pimp lolita nation's painted galaxy - but not sure she'd want me to plaster up a link... and, even though i think it's inactive right now, dee vapr's hungryghost.

lastly, but not leastly, i check out the fluxblog fairly often to keep abreast of his latest discoveries - boy's got his ear so close to the ground he can hear a garage band tune up in denver...

yr turn.

I read Rage & Glint's blogs, because they're massively entertaining and cool. And I read the other Barbelith Collective one's sometimes when I'm bored.

I don't read anyone's blog, because I can't read. Everything I post here is just a collection of random thoughts - if it bears any resemblance to anything anyone else posted, it's complete coincidence, since I am unable to read them. You could tell?

If I could read, however, I would be reading anyone who has a livejournal that I know about. I like to boost my friends count up, because it makes me feel popular.

Alright then how do I get one of these, I've heard them mentioned all the time. I had a look at the live journal site and you need a password - can someone give me one? or is it not the done thing to ask?

Any advice - Awa an bile yer heed?

You'll probably find it easier to start at Blogger - try their blogspot service (you don't need your own webspace for this). It is, I think, at this address.

Oh sure, blogger may be a great deal more stable, but I think livejournal is a bit easier to use.

bear, if you really want a livejournal, I've got a code you can have.

My favorite blogs are all linked to the side of my own blog, but these are the ones that I really think everyone should read -

* Suds - Suds is amazing on a daily basis.

* Videodrome's blog is consistently well-written and insightful, it's more or less the same format as my current blog - enthusiastically talking about films/music/events that he's recently seen.

*Straylight has a nice Diaryland blog, it doesn't have a real theme, but it's always entertaining.

*Todd/Dilletantism's Livejournal tends to be very funny, and his rant about Ann Powers is a blog classic, I say.

*The Apple-Picker's Livejournal is pretty much a straight-up diary edited for net consumption...it may benefit greatly from actually knowing the person who writes it, I think.

*C'mon, you all read Venusberg, don't you? Haus in blog form!

The appeal of Notopia by Autopilot Disengaged is something I can't quite articulate, but trust me, it's pretty good.

LiveJournals blow cos you ahve to pay to edit yr template (so I have been told... ), and... I don't know. I just dislike them. They would probablly be ebtetr if everyone had a LiveJournal, so all people could leave comments and be on firends lists. As it is, it's just pretending to have a monopoly... But I do like the idea of a message system.

DiaryLand is very girly, and the front page makes me want to eat hair every time I see it. It's so... primary school. That said, I do like their one-page-one-post thing. Which is something I'd work out how to do for my own blog if most of my entries ever went long enough to warrent it.

Blogger is nice if you don't want to have to trawl thru archives, but is very... plain. Also, having seen the pain BlogKomm has caused people around me, I don't think I'll be loading it on any time soon. Editing the template is easy, as are collective blogs, which would be an advantage if they were ever any good...

So... yeh. Go figure.

Glint - you can edit your template to a certain point with free livejournal accounts.

If anyone wants a Livejournal account, PM me and I can hook you up. I have a limited amount of codes, though, so act fast.

depends on how much control you feel you need, really - I couldn't live without my full control over html and the template, and bizarre php'ing on maggot sixteen. I think blogger's pretty much the best, but it seems to go offline a hell of a lot.....

LJ: with paid accounts you can piss about with the template as much as you want, and the interface is very nice and easy to do that. Free ones, you have to accept one of the standard templates. Though you can pay, change the template, then let the membership expire and keep the template.

fuck, it's only $25 a year, that's a cheap round of drinks where I am

I've been thinking of moving my blog to a custom hosted version, now I'm in a perl kinda mood, but then I wouldn't have the whole community thing going on.

er, sorry, autopilot, but I did kinda answer the question earlier on...

LiveJournal sucks. It's always down, and ya. You need a code. It sure is fun to leave comments in your friends journals and look up people who share your extremely obscure interests though.

Autopilot: "manages - uniquely, i think - to contain more questions than straight statements - like the electric kool-aid acid test in a head-on collision with the wonder years."

That was a suprub analogy. I'm gonna put it on my userinfo page under "what do my readers have to say about me?"

uh, haven't really played around with it, but you can get free blogspace at upsaid. they offer commenting and private messaging systems, which seem quite cool, although the template stuff is a bit confusing if you're used to blogger code. if you're new to the whole thing it might be a good place to start, though -- and it's ad free.

Re: upsaid

I've just set one up, and will let you know how usable it is when I get around to using it. The actual set-up was pretty striaght-forward, and they don't demand any personal details other than email (which is used to confirm registration etc). The templates are a bit nasty, colour-wise, but their basic one is nice and readable.

Ooh, sorry Auto, the proper bit. I only ever look at blogs when prompted to by a link from somewhere like this. I often think "that was funny/interesting/useful, I should come back here more often," but never do. Actually, that's a lie, I prolly check out the blogs of certain posters here regularly, once a month or so. Anything that promises larfs, gasps, juicy gossip, insights into the psychology of the poster that wouldn't be gleaned here (brrr, I'm creepy, aren't I?), or links to interesting pages will get me looking.
