Local elections. What?

What is the story with these English local elections coming about? They will be on May the 2nd apparently. How do I go about registering to vote? I don't think I am registered anywhere official as being at this new address in England.
Also I have to admit I am completely unmotivated to vote. These are local elections and I'm not local, at least not in any permanent way.
The only campaigning I have seen so far has been a leaflet through the door saying Liberal Democrats. Nothing else. Not even a manifesto. So locally I know that a party called the Liberal Democrats exists and that is about it.

a local vote for local people?

i think you had to be registered ages ago to vote. i'm so transient i don't even bother to try any more - i won't be at the same address for long enough to make it worth it. last time i did vote locally, i went for the green party - there seems to be more point in local elections. i think they did rather well.

...and what a fine example for the nuclear family he was.

Yeah, SFD, my experience with the Electoral roll in any number of places is that it takes months to process your application before you're elligble to vote. Rather depressing given that local elections have proved the easiest means for extremists to gain a toehold on power or representation. The examples of Oldham or the Isle of Dogs prove that we can't afford to place any additional barriers, alongside apathy and lack of information, before voters.
