Perhaps I'm just being oversensitive to accusations of intellectual eliteism, but I've occasionally got the impression that some 'lithers feel a bit adrift when they venture into the Lab. Hopefully we'll have a bunch of permalinks in the future which will remedy that, but until then I thought that the following might be useful.

TIPS:

If you don't understand something, then for goodness sake say so. You may get joshed a little but no-one's going to laugh at you (and if they do then fuck'em).

If someone posts a link, it's a good idea to visit the site and read it. If you find a site too dry or obscure to be helpful, then mention this. Someone else might have a more accessible take on the same information.

The Barbelith search facility is now working. Make use of it. (Filling in the summaray field will make your topic easier to find).

And finally, if you're new to HTML this might be useful. Not all the tags will work on this board, of course, but you can find out how to make hyperlinks and post images.

I'm sure we'll get plenty more suggestions, but this'll do for a start.

Great idea MC!

Another reference point, for a more fringe frame of mind (NOTE: I said FRINGE, a lot of this isn't even close to mainstream thoughts and some of it's just pranks) is deoxy.org

At the very least it's a fun way to waste time.

I'll go through my links and see if I can pull up some reference links for computer related stuff. But, off hand there is:

slashdot - a clearing house of sorts for all things geek. From Star Trek news, to recent particle physics findings. And of course a heavy dose of computer stuff (mostly open source, Linux stuff)

ZDNet - general news on technology.

Network Computing - a magazine focusing on networking technology

Network Magazine - another magazine on networking.

Nature is peer reviewed but layperson-friendly.
I get an email newsletter from them, which is why so many of the things I link to up here come from them.

Of course, it's only fair to mention the anti-fringe
skepdic.com

although the further reading sections are often more informative than the articles themselves.
