Help save my cat!

So...how do I get my cat to start taking the pills that'll keep her alive? She's got an overactive thyroid (10x more active than it should be) and she's as thin as a rake. I've tried everything: every type of food imaginable, forcing her mouth open - she just won't swallow the bloody things. My arms are covered in cuts....her teeth and claws are sooo sharp. She really will die if I don't find a way to get the fucking things in her.

Help!

(Oh, and thanks.)

Have you tried crushing the pills up and mixing the powder in with some soft food? If that doesn't work, mix the powder in with some water and use an eyedropper...unless mixing it with water dilutes it.

Sorry I can't be any more help.

I'm currently going through the same thing with my dog (only it's just anti-inflammatory pills cos she's pulled a ligament in one of her feet) - fortunately, wrapping them in cheese seems to be working this time- never has before!
I do remember hearing (and I think this was about cats rather than dogs) that if they have stuff on their nose they HAVE to lick it off- maybe crushing them and trying that, if you haven't already?
Huggles to the cat, btw. And to you- I know how fucking upsetting it is when my dog gets ill, especially if you start feeling like they're resenting you for trying to make them better...

Wrapping the cat up in a big bathtowel so it can't claw you and sort of sticking it under your arm so you can use both hands to administer the pill is the approved practice in these cases, I belive. Can you get someone in to help?

(Oh, and hugs to kitty.)

Thanks all.

Really have tried every foodstuff imaginable - all the goodies she really loves (and loads more besides), and I've tried crushing the bastard things, and I've wrapped her in a towel while someone else opened her mouth and tried to ram the pill down (in a nice, caring way), but.....we got only big pain and biting for our trouble.

The pippet thing sounds interesting, though. Have to get her mouth open first, but...should be easy after that.

Cheers.

I found that if you can get the pill into the cats mouth just sharply puff in their face/nose. They swallow while drawing their head back.

The towel is the way to go, Runce, as Mordant suggested. Had to give previous cat lots of tablets and swaddling him in a towel, fairly tightly, then (preferably getting someone else to) pop the pill in, close the mouth tight and stroke the throat /underside of the mouth for a good couple of minutes usually did work.

The towel bit took a bit of practice but once I'd got the hang of that I was OK. One problem would be that after a few minutes you'd think "he must have swallowed it by now" but the minute you let him open his mouth, he'd spit it out. & the other problem was he knew what was coming the next time and would hide.

I never found a way to give the tablets surrepticiously to cats. Too picky. Dogs gulp down any old rubbish that's disguised in their food but the cat would eat everything but the tablet. Powdered, I had no more luck although I often thought wrapping it in a chicken carcass and putting it in the rubbish bin might entice him. They always seem keener to eat things you don't want them to.

I guess they don't do partial thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine tx on cats. Or maybe it would just be hugely expensive. Otherwise, will you not be giving the beastie tablets for the rest of his life? Best of luck anyway. Poor little bugger.

Im third on the towel - you have to be extra sure they are swaddled good, though, or theyll get you by surprise. my younger cat had a nasty respitory infection from the shelter I got her from, and had to stuff her (and later my older cat, as she caught it from her) with pills and liquid medicine twice daily. my older cat swallowed the pills nicely and with little work. the younger struggled and hacked them up as soon as Id let her go. I just had to make sure to get the pill far back into her mouth and be extra patient. Im surprised the poor thing wasnt terrified of me after weeks of all that!

Yeah, the treatment's too expensive, so she's on the pills forever, I'm afraid.

I mastered the pill-down-throat-rub-throat thing w/ my last cat - twas fairly easy - but Whiskers, she's dangerous. Will experiment tonight.

Just in case the vet didn't tell you about the final tip here:

1) Yes! Towel's are good.
2) Pry mouth open.
3) Drop pill in mouth (as far back as possible, but just getting it in the mouth is good!).
4) Keep mouth closed with your hand.

5) With your finger, stroke from your kittie's chin down her throat, firmly, but gently; this massage gently moves the pill to her throat and makes her swallow it. Be patient. Do this for a couple minutes.

Of course, this was all a piece of cake compared to actually *catching* the ill kittie.

Er..... nevermind.

Apparently you know about the rub thing.

Oh dear, Runce. Administering pills always looks so easy when the vet does it, doesn't it? It's the opening of the mouth that I find the tricky bit - holding the cat's head in one hand and with the other pulling the jaw down gently by pushing a finger on the jaw skin in front of the lower front teeth.

Good luck. I guess you know that if your cat licks its lips, it has swallowed the pill.

Aaaah, that licking-the-lips business! I'd forgotten about that - thanks for reminding me.

my young one has proven that she can still yak it up after the lip lick - make sure you watch your crafty feline afterwards to be certain!

Just a quick thankyou to everyone who rushed to Whiskers's aid yesterday. You are all very lovely. So....looks like we've sorted it, but no-one mentioned the hold-her-head-back-so-far-she-can't-scratch-you method! What's wrong w/ you people!

She hates me now.

Aww. Talk to her. Explain what it's all about and make a fuss of her. She'll come round.

Either that or explore the suppository option.

I've always talked to her too much. You can't walk past/look at Whiskers w/out her bleating at you....it's a bit weird and annoying ("They fuck you up yr Mum and Dad; they don't mean to, but they do" - doubly true in the case of the human/animal 'parenting' dynamic). Our other cat, Dennis, who's blind and deaf (and as close to death's door as it gets), actually howls-cum-moos like a wolfcow. It's really unnerving - late at night and outside my bedroom door: Yowzers! I mean, Dennis actually fucking bellows.... Wish you could hear him.

And Whiskers and Dennis get on well? My cat, Nureyev (Nuri) is pretty vocal also, and it's the range of his sounds that fascinates me. I love the little chirruping sound he makes when he greets me when I get home from work or wherever.

The solution is simple.

Stop collecting cats. Start collecting ducks.

please butter the pill... or at least margerine.
pry jaws is cool if yo drop it at the back of throat, hold shut >gentle< throat stroke... nice and smooth.

never tried blowing

Seemed Whiskers was iller than we thought.

She died peacefully (I know it's a cliche, but it's true) on Tuesday night. We buried her on Thursday. I fucking loved that cat. Couldn't stop stroking her rigor-mortified body (which might sound rank, but that's the way it is). Dennis was glued to her side till the end and then he just pissed off outside.

Feeling a bit sad this week.
