Fashion Disobedience? (Ambercrombie & Fitch, eBay & pissed off Asian-Americans)

(I don't know if this belongs in Haus's hate speech thread, if so please move this thread on over to the Head Shop)

Ambercrombie & Fitch recently released their new line of duds and, not surprisingly, Asain Americans took offense to some of the shirts with such progressive shirts like:

(in case that image didn't load...)

Well, A&F pulled the shirts after a bunch of Asian-Americans complained about them. As A&F PR outfit put it "We personally thought Asians would love this T-shirt," said Hampton Carney, with Paul Wilmot Communications in New York, the public relations firm where Abercrombie referred a reporter's call. Another news story (from CNN) here.

All done, story's over, right? Nope. Because these shirts are now collector's items, they're ending up on eBay. As if $25 for a t-shirt (the origional listed price) isn't enough, some of these are going for over $100 if you can believe it. So this is what some folks on one of my other boards (Giant Robot) are doing. Creating disposible e-mail accounts, placing a huge bid (which no one intends to pay) to "win" the shirt and therefore getting the contact info of the sellers. Then releasing the seller's e-mail, snail mail & phone # online & on the board. If so inclined, here's the thread of said information--it's called "Robots MobiliZZZZ part Duex [sic]"

So, what y'all think?

i think:

that the shirts look like something from several decades ago. what bright spark came up with that design??

that the ebay fuck up plan is interesting, to say the least. the collectors must know why the shirts were stopped in the first place, therefore they are deliberately setting out to make money, because the money's more important than the offensive racism on the shirts. just talking myself through this - yeah, fuck em. (unless the money made will go to anti racist causes.....)

Interesting

Quite aside from everything else (and there is a lot that could be talked about in there) why exactly do you want to publish the details of these shirt resellers? what are you hoping to achieve? do you think that the shirt resellers actively espouse racist views and want to sell their wares to other racists? or are you more irked at ebay for servicing a comodity fetish for the taboo and forbidden? are you conflating the two?

What exactly are you rebelling against?
