It's that time again - TV Turn Off Week

It's that time of the year Give it a rest for a week and sit in front of the computer instead!

I find it a bit silly that people make a big deal out of turning off the television. Is it so hard for people to turn the TV off, that they have to make a holiday out of it? How hard is it to reach up from the volume/channel buttons of your remote to the off switch, get up out of your recliner, and go outside and get some fresh air?

I've never participated in this, and I seriously doubt I ever will. The TV sitting there, blank, gray, ominous... gives me a complete wiggins. Makes me feel like I'm being watched. I've tried closing its cabinet, but dammit, I still know it's back there.

After checking out that website, I will once again say this is the silliest thing I have ever heard.

I want everybody to do something for me. See that button that's bigger than all the rest? Yes...yes...that's the one, the one that says either power or on/off. Right, now I want you to point the remote at the TV and press the big button. No..no, its ok, the little people in the box are still there, they're just invisible. The little box people want you to go outside. I know, its big and kind of scary out there, but you'll be ok.

I'm now going to sit and laugh at all the people who are enslaved by the television.

Even easier: stop paying your cable bill and let the fuckers disconnect you. Works for me: haven't had TV service for three weeks now, and have no impetus to get hooked up again.

i again have no access to tv. and don't miss it at all, although when i was off work sick yesterday, with the landlady out, i watched t j hooker. will again today, too. but i have no real problem with not having access - by an amazing coincidence, i am now writing shitloads of fiction.

Trijhaos - its not that easy you know, my TV talks to me, tells me that there is something very good on....

Here's a deal then I'll stop watching the TV for a week if you stop using the Internet for a week

They might as well have "Turn off you sex drive week" or "turn off ruining your liver week."

Its a relatively simple process. Its not like you're cutting off a hand or something.

Can I still watch videos?

No TV at all. The magic box stays off. No nintendo, no videos, no DVDS, no Buf-....oh well there goes that idea.

if you're so addicted to tv that you have to turn it off you're a sillo twat. tv is just like any other medium. i don't like newspapers but i don't think anyone should stop reading them, and i don't think i'm better than those who do. and i don't like being looked down on just because i like watching tv. sorry that i'm inteligent enough to stop the tv demons taking over my mind any time i watch it, but i'm not a mong. if yer think tv is shit i might agree with you. but some of it is worth watching. even if you do live your life with a frown.

Of course, there's some great shows on the television and as you said its like any other medium, but you don't see "Put the newspaper down week" or "Stop reading books week", this whole "TV Turnoff Week" is silly.

Maybe they should just switch it to "stop watching crap TV week". No temptation island, survivor, buffy, etc. etc.

Trijhaos
21:16 / 23.04.02
They could, but how many people are actually going to stop watching those crappy talk shows? "My pregnant teen hooker daughter has hooked up with my ex-husband's boyfriend's ex-lover".

It's TV Turn Off Week yet again. Is there anyone who actually watches much TV that is doing it this year? I work for a digital TV company, so am sometimes made to watch it at work, which is the only reason turning it off might be tricky (oh, and the last episode of the series of 6 Feet Under, but maybe I shouldn't admit that).

The book I am currently reading mentioned Bhutan, which was apparently the last nation to introduce TV, so I guess we can't even holiday there anymore if we really wanted to escape it.

As a cable user I am a bit addicted to the high-end comedy that endlessly marches in front of my eyes. Friends, Frasier, Dilbert, Simpsons, Futurama, Will and Grace, old Buffy, Bob & Margaret ... I tend to watch with half an eye while doing something else and it's a BAD BAD habit and I should learn to concentrate on one thing at a time, but I feel guilty if that one thing is television which isn't really, if I look deep into my heart, worth it.

So I will turn off the TV this week, with the exception of unmissable destination television like new Angel, and anything else I'll kick myself for missing.

One of those does not belong there, and it's not Survivor or Temptation Island.

No, it's very very definitely not! This is a board full of geeks, damn you! We will have no further mockery of the Holy Slayer. This isn't Metafilter, you know!

I actually gave up watching TV quite a while ago- it was about the point where Buffy finished and Fraser just wasn't funny anymore. There seemed little pint carrying on after that.

It's a bit creepy having threads like this walking the board as if they were living. It's a little too much like Board of the Dead. I wonder whether this is one of those rare occasions when perhaps we should have started a new thread or something.
