It seems that the US executive is calling its retaliatory action "Operation Infinite Jusctice". Whaaaat? Can someone please save me from going mad with cynicism and absurdity . . . I don't want to be flippant but, I'm changing the channel, going to ground, cutting the cord . . .

How about "Operation Ooops"?

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A leading Republican senator said Wednesday that last week's terrorist attacks represented "a massive failure" on the part of the U.S. intelligence community, and he faulted federal law enforcement agencies for a lack of coordination in relaying key information to one another.

"I think it was a debacle," said Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Alabama, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, in an interview with CNN. "It was a real massive failure. I don't know what happened. I don't know how it happened, but at the end of the day, we know that we were not warned."

Shelby noted that some information on two suspected hijackers had been passed from the CIA to the FBI, which in turn passed it to the Immigration and Naturalization Service. But authorities failed to catch up with the men -- identified by sources as Khalid Al Midhair and Salem Alhamzi -- who were on board the hijacked jet that slammed into the Pentagon, according to the Justice Department.

"It's again, in my judgment, too many bureaucratic failures, not enough coordination between the agencies," Shelby said.

Shelby said the CIA director should be granted Cabinet-level status to elevate the agency's influence and prestige within a presidential administration. He said changes are needed at several agencies, including the CIA, the FBI and the National Security Agency. “We not only need more money, we need to change some things, and they've got to be changed at the top," Shelby said.

Shelby's comments come in the wake of revelations that the FBI had at least suspicions about the behavior of some individuals now tied to what may be a broader hijacking conspiracy.

One man being held in U.S. custody, Zacarias Moussaoui, was arrested August 17 in Minnesota on an alleged passport violation. Moussaoui was in custody at the time of last week's attacks, being held as a material witness.

Moussaoui had apparently raised suspicions because he sought training in flying commercial jets at an Oklahoma flight school despite having a lack of experience. FBI agents visited the Airman Flight School two weeks before the attacks, asking questions about Moussaoui.

ooooooops!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that calling a military operation to kill thousands of people under the flimsiest of pretexts, to risk plunging the world into a Muslim vs. Western World War, to bring misery to people who have not done you any harm all over one man who the US have not yet produced a shred of proof that he is in any way responsible for these actions... AND then to call it Operation Infinite Justice... why, that's as disgusting and abhorant as flying planes into buildings.

Well, at least no-ones making any pretense that the US is taking the moral high ground...

And I thought "Operation Desert Shield/Storm" were bad...

It does certainly smack of more of that "good vs. evil" bullshit, which does nobody ANY good at all.

But then, our same president was ready to launch a crusade ('til smarter heads prevailed, grace a dieu!)...

My other "Operation Ooops" link is hiding here. A juicy excerpt:

Those who fight terror for a living know the deal. Success is expected. Failure is intolerable. Last Tuesday was intolerable. Not just because of the volume of destruction and loss of life, but because anyone who has ever tried to keep a secret had good reason to wonder: Given the obvious scope of this terror operation — the number of perpetrators/potential leaks, the elaborateness of the preparations/potential money trails — how could thousands of spooks who supposedly had Osama bin Laden in their cross hairs for a decade miss every single moving part?

At some point, when the nation has moved beyond grief and vengefulness, CIA Director George Tenet and FBI Director Robert Mueller will have to explain how the $10 billion-a-year anti-terror system failed, and how they can ensure it won't fail again. The answer is not a lack of effort. In 1995 Bill Clinton signed a top-secret order authorizing the CIA to run covert operations against bin Laden. Since then his every word has been analyzed, his international network has been diagrammed by computers, his movements have been tracked in hopes — all vain so far — of capturing him.

Oooooooooops...

I know this isn't a particularly popular stance, but ...

... I completely agree that an 'Operation' designed to permit a government to slaughter an uncountable amount of [presumably] innocent people is asinine to say the least. However, we don't know for certain where this operation is going.

That being what it is, I'm incredibly concerned, but completely unwilling to jump to conclusions about precisely what's going to occur next. I've planned for the worst, but I hope and pray for the best.

The unfortunate thing is, politically speaking, for Bush to do anything, whatsoever, it was necessary to create as ambiguous a target as possible. Elsewise, for instance, it wouldn't be possible to do anything with the Taliban - or any other power - that shelters, feeds, or tranports terrorists. Literally, impossible. He's going to be held to his word, utterly and completely, and therefore cannot afford a verbal mis-step that puts him in the position of going back on his word were another course of action to become more prudent than the original assumptions seemed to indicate. This is quite frightening, and the potential for disaster is massive. However, to assume this is going to result in the U.S. throwing force all over the place without any process or evidence is still jumping the gun. So, let's hope our fears about Bush and his cabinet's plans are entirely unfounded.

"By what you think and what you do, you create the world around you daily aknew,"

Optimism has a point. We're doing a serious disservice to ourselves and each other if we permit cynicism to fill in the blanks for us.

Hrm. Apparently, they are thinking about changing the operation name. Muslim faith states that only Allah can grant Infinite Justice - making the name itself highly offensive to Muslim faithful.

You'd think they'd have given Bush & co a crash course in Islamic beliefs by now...

Some small part of me can't help but believe this was deliberate. That also goes for Blair calling it a "crusade".

Well, apparently they ARE changing the name, as religious leaders have raised objections with "Infinite Justice". Now "IJ" is considered to only have been a "working title". Coming to a Thrid World nation near you, in full 3D and stereo. It'll be like you're really there.

Okay, now I know that the whole operation is fucked. The goddamn CODE NAME had to be test-marketed!

What, the upstanding, pale, shaky, sweating bloke who runs America? Rubbish.

When you're the President, it's medication. Like being a fighter pilot on uppers or tranqs. Comes with the job.

Isn't that nice?

Just to tell you all that I'm following the threads here in "New York and Washington". I wish I could post, but I can't think or argue properly when I'm infuriated/disgusted at something... and right now I'm both...
fuck fuck fuck

can't we do better than this??? Are we not human beings????

(and then Light is made: perhaps that's the reason...)

(update: ok, I just posted two replies in another thread... it was a tall order.)
