I was just skimming through one of the weekly rags here in Toronto, and it turns out some blokes who call themselves Zero 7 are playing a gig at the Opera House tomorrow night for about $15 (that's 6 quid, or 30 cents american). The write-up was pretty enthusiastic. Can I get any recommendations to either go and see them, or stay home for the Simpsons and X-Files?

Unless they are planning on performing their remix of Radiohead's "Climbing Up The Walls" with Thom Yorke, and then getting the hell off of the stage, I say you should stay home. They're just no good, says I. Bland yuppie background music...

They're all right, if, as Flux suggests, a little insipid. They're kind of like a watered-down version of Air, if that helps.

Basically, Zero 7 are the kind of band I wouldn't necessarily go and see, but which I wouldn't avoid if they were on at a festival somewhere.

Oh, and they did a very nice remix of Up With People by Lambchop, too...

Our Lady of The Two Towers

I thought their first single was all right, then I discovered that Zero 7 were actually two scruffy men that didn't appear in the video and that the two women were actually hired for just that song, a la 'Horny' by someonewho'snevertroubledthechartsagain 'featuring' Bump and Grind (IIRC). They seem to be aiming for that much coveted space in music vacated by Everything but the Girl when they split up due to musical indifference.

I quite liked their debut LP - but when they're good, they're good, when they're bad, they're Des'Ree. Which is a bad thing.

The Bent album is probably a better chillout CD - I have almost no chillout copmilations, because they're vile, but I do have lots of albums which occasionally crop up on there.

Live... I can't say if they'd be good or not. They're at Homelands this year, but I can't see them setting the world on fire.

Stay home. Or, better yet, go get some Cora's pizza, wembley; it'll be a more enriching spend. I have a terrible feeling that it'll be insipid, live; it's passable on CD, but not much more than that.

Well, the people have spoken! Plus I found one of their more insipid mp3s floating around. Yeech. Besides, I'm in pain from last night, when Super Furry Animals guest-DJed at Blow-Up.
